Of all the contractors we contacted for a bid, Scott Helpenstill was the most helpful in working with us to maximize the space without breaking the budget. He had suggestions for quality components that met our needs. We wanted a solid surface for our vanity top, but the cost of quartz, quality granite and Silestone was a big factor. Scott introduced us to a solid surface with almost no porosity made with pieces of marble and was very affordable. We had put off the remodel for several months, but after having damage in the bathroom due to lightning striking our home, we finally moved forward. Scott was very accommodating with reworking the bid to cover some of the damage to the room. We wanted the work completed prior to Thanksgiving and Scott worked with us to schedule it so it was completed the first week of November. The first week his plumber, electrician, painter and cabinet maker all came to review the plan and take measurements. Within a few days everything was removed down to the subfloor and sheetrock. The framers came in and built new half wall, expanded the opening for a larger medicine cabinet, cut out and framed the television niche. The electrician came in and moved the wiring for the lights, installed new recessed lighting, moved outlets (and cable) for the television, added a switch box for the ceiling fan and installed a new outlet for the "charging station" hidden in the new cabinetry. The plumbers relocated piping and drains for the shower, tub and lavatory. Drop cloths were utilized during the entire process from the entry, up the stairs and into the bathroom. Furniture in the bedroom was covered with plastic to keep the dust off. The walls were patched and all the sheetrock was taped and floated, then textured. The tub arrive and was set in place. Cabinetry was brought in and installed. Since we wanted to see the tile installed before selecting the stain and wall color, the cabinetry was protected. Porcelain tile was installed in the shower with bench, tub surround and floor. The stain and paint were applied, followed by the cabinet maker coming back to install the cabinet hardware and plantation shutters. The plumber came back to install the shower and lavatory fixtures and set the new toilet. The vanity mirrors and frameless glass shower panels were installed. Final touch up and then a cleaning crew arrived to clean the new bathroom, the bedroom, the landing, staircase and entry. Overall it took 5 weeks from start to finish and the new bathroom is wonderful. The Portofino countertop is beautiful and coordinates wonderfully with the tile and paint selections. Scott provided allowances in his bid for the fixtures and since we purchased all the faucets, shower fixtures, toilet and fan, he deducted the allowances from the total. Scott met us at the tile showroom. He and the designer on staff helped us select the tile color, sizes, arrangement and accents. When it came time for paint selection, once we narrowed it down, Scott painted sections of the wall next to the tile on a Friday so we could look at the colors in a various light over the weekend. All of Scott's subcontractors work for them on a regular basis and we were very comfortable with them in our home. On the rare occasion when no one could be home to allow access, we let Scott know and he would come to let them in. Any time there was a question, work stopped until we could be consulted. Normally we always work with Angie's List vendors, but Helpenstill Construction came recommended by numerous church members and they had done remodeling work at our church as well. One of our friends has had Helpenstill remodel 2 bathrooms and a kitchen. We have 2 more master size bathrooms that will need to be updated from builder's grade in the future and there is no doubt we will call on Scott & Helpenstill Construction.
