The price was VERY reasonable. We did a lot of the prep work as we had been working in the kitchen for a year, building some new cabinets were needed, modifying old cabinets, adding lots of molding and detail, etc. But there was still a lot to do. They came in and sanded down the cabinets we hadn't gotten too, caulked for a full day, taped off the other rooms and protected everything as needed, sprayed a great coat of primer, and then sprayed 3 coats of paint. I wanted 3 because I didn't want any wood bleed through, and sometimes 2 just doesn't cut it. We went with oil based paint, and I like that Roberts was really honest about what new/old products worked best for a kitchen like ours. We wanted oil base because of the hardness it cures to, but were open to using new products if there was anything as good out there.
The only minor thing that happened is that the last coat of paint on the cabinet doors didn't seem to cure as fast and a few of the doors stuck to the surface they were laid on to dry. We had some molding laying around the house and the painters used that to hold the doors off the floor to give maximum drying power. IF we had even mentioned this to Roberts, I know he would have sent himself or his guys back to rectify it... but it was 3 doors, and being DIYers we just fixed it ourself. It isn't like we didn't have other work to do in the kitchen for other things when they were done - so it was easy. There were a few questions and such during the job,and he or his employees responded well to our suggestions or preferenced and were very professional, they aim to please.
The only thing I would do differently is that if they wanted to lay the doors on anything for the final coat, I would make sure the outside surface was painted last and left face up so any sticking would be on the unseen interior door surface.
NOTE - we paid for paint separately in order to really control costs, so price doesn't include paint which was about another $600 - for premium Sherwin Williams oil based paint. We went with the best, didn't skimp.
Oh, and they also patched drywall and retextured the ceiling, and the texture was such a perfect match to the old ceiing even we can't see where they started and ended. Great job, a small job
I let them use a trailer my husband owns, so they could pile all the debris up in one spot and make it easier to take to the dump. It is still sitting in my front yard, because they never took all the garbage to the dump. There was trash left in my garage and on the back porch. Paint spills are still not cleaned up. Cigarette butts were discarded in the back yard, front yard and garage. I had to pick those up. The bathtub in the master bathroom was painted white (it was black) and the touch-up paint they used for some places they missed when the painted and for a big chunk chipped out of the bottom is gray!
I've had this company do four or five jobs for me, but this is the last one. In every other instance, the estimate given was the ending price. I never had any surprises. But now, after what I'm going through with them, I wouldn't recommend them to paint a doghouse. I can no longer trust them. The company is shady and I will no longer do business with them.
"The original estimate for $5,000 was a rough labor estimate and at the time when we walked through with the customer there were some things that she had said would be down the road, a phase two of the project. Instead we ended up doing all of them at one time. There was a lot of indecisiveness, ad-libbing, and changes made throughout the course of the job. In fact our rates compared to the going rate were considerably lower. The hourly rate we charged for the plumbing and electrical work was a third of what a plumber or electrician would of charged. In order to satisfy the customer we deducted all monetary gain from the job. She was billed only for our costs (labor and material) in order to avoid any negative feedback like this. There were even some things that we did for free. For example after the bathrooms were completed she hired electricians to install new fans. She asked us to give her a quote to repair the ceilings after them. We went ahead and did this at no cost just to show our sincerity and good faith. No contractor could of done a remodel of this nature for $5,000 it isn't possible. Like I said earlier the $5,000 was just a rough labor estimate and didn't include the full scope of work that was performed. As of today the bathtub is touched up, the one paint drip by the fireplace has been cleaned up, and arrangements have been made for the trash to be picked up. Our original plan was to get the trash taken to the dump after all of the trades had finished. That way there was only one trip to the dump. It doesn't surprise me that there was trash and cigarette butts in places they didn't belong. The customer has several dogs and we saw the dogs get into the trash. Also we'd load the trash trailer up and the next day things would be missing from it. It was obvious it was being dug through in the evenings. The customer did purchase a lot of the materials, as did we. We had under $3,000 in materials purchased. I offered to make copies of the receipts for the customer. We always keep receipts, photos, a detailed description of work performed for each job. Last Tuesday I went by and visited with the homeowner for a bit. She had the check already made out before I got there. Everything seemed okay at this point. I'm a little surprised that almost a week later we're having these issues. We feel that since we deducted all profit from the cost , touched up, made arrangements for the trash to be picked up, and that there are no complaints in regards to the quality of the work performed that we have done everything to remedy the situation in good faith. Good faith and our reputation are the most important things to us after being in business as long as we have. We have hundreds of happy, satisfied customers but once in a while you get in a situation like this where there is just no way to please everybody. Thankfully we don't find ourselves in that situation often but when it does happen the most honest and fair thing to do is remove any profit from the bill and everyone just go their separate ways. It saddens me that it had to come down to this."
