Mr. Lolohea arrived on time to survey the job site, make measurement, and estimate the materials needed. He proposed a 4 inch thick concrete slab joined to the existing patio with rebar drilled into the existing slab and extending into the new slab. We also needed an existing slab left behind by a previous owner for an above ground swimming pool pump and filter. And we needed some very large flagstones moved to a different spot in the yard. I informed him that my wife had encouraged me to hire a professional to remove the swimming pool pump slab. But while waiting to make the final decision, I had purchased an electric jackhammer from a local discount tool store, you know the "bay transportation" store.. He asked if he could see it. When I showed it to him, he said that if he was permitted to use my jackhammer, the cost would be very minimal. His estimate was very reasonable. The work was delayed from his original timeline because of a rain storm that would have ruined the sacks of cement. He placed the forms on the date he originally specified, but arrived at a later date when the weather was better to pour the patio extension. It was finished in a single day. When done, I asked what I needed to do to ensure the slab "cured" correctly in order that it did not split or crack. He said that I should keep the side with sunshine on it wetted every several hours, and I should use a sprinkler on the slab on days when the city permitted watering. After the job was complete, he said that my electric jackhammer was a winner. He offered to purchase it. I said I had another slab that needed removal at a rental unit my wife owned. Until that job was done, I still needed the jackhammer. He said if I was willing to let him bid that job, he would make it worth my while to let him do it at a reduced price, if I included the jackhammer in the deal. I agreed, and he has offered us a very good bid for the rent house job. The "B" rating for price was due to another bid that was slightly lower, but I felt the contractor was not as forthcoming as Mr. Lolohea. I could have gotten the job done cheaper, but decided not to. After the job was done, I was satisfied that I had made a wise choice.
