Let me say I am reporting this now as a new member and because we are having 1/2 round gutters placed on roof and I am sorely reminded of this experience. I am hoping the gutters will detract from the 5th issue which is discussed below.
The sheet metal machine showed up with the operator and 2 helpers. David Broyles appeared shortly afterwards to "get things under way". He assured us in the beginning that his lead roofing guy would always be on-site at all times if he could not be there. David was on-site perhaps a total of 1.5 hours during the entire 4-5 day install. The crew was completely Latino and either denied speaking english or could not speak english. One we were sure spoke english - the lead man.
The first "issue" was the immediate replacement of rotted decking under original roof. We knew there was rotted wood, discussed with David and were told by him they would replace at $50 a panel. Well, the felt was going up and no rotted wood was being removed or replaced. No ply wood was even on-site to perform the replacement. The husband had to get up on the roof that evening after work and visually inspect and mark all the rotted wood for the crew to replace. We still are not sure we got it all, as felt had already been installed.
The second "issue" was that Superior Metals (SM) did not provide a porta potty for crew who were going into our service area to relieve themselves.
The third "issue" was the unauthorized use of ladders we had stored on-site.
The fourth "issue" was the chimney cap, which came hand painted, dented, scratched and bent up. This was immediately rejected and returned to David's shop to be redone. The second time around was just as bad, paint still wet and drip lines all over the sides. We searched for an alternative. David would provide us with a copper chimney cap at an additional $325 which was half of his cost. This arrived with hand prints all over it, which I wiped off and informed the guys to wipe off or wear gloves prior to installing. This request was ignored. And the hand prints were obvious from ground level.
The " fifth" issue and straw that broke the camels back was when the lead man was pulled off the last 2 days, with the excuse by David that they had an emergency in the form of a leaking roof somewhere they had to repair. But that lead guy would be back. This left the installation being done by not-very-experienced workers on-site with no supervision other than what I could do when home. Their experience level was displayed in the crooked cuts of metal facia and the last panel along the longest exterior edge of the roof being cut crookedly. This was not noticed by us until roof vent had been installed and all was ready to "wrap up". When I pointed this out to David, he immediately responded with "shape of roof, etc" was probably the cause. But when he actually looked at it, could not deny the crooked edge. I asked what he was going to do about it and he basically stated "Nothing, the roof is already finished and I would have to tear apart the whole roof." That being true, he could have offered some sort of financial compensation - but he did not.
And last sixth "issue" was getting a tax receipt from David which he did finally provide us after husband called him numerous times over a 2-3 week period.
