I can't begin to express my discontent and dissatisfaction with Mark Watson and the overall handling of my project. We signed a contract on July 18, 2012 and he told me this project would be 2-3 weeks easy. My wife and I decided to embark on this project since it was five years since we moved into our home and our yard was unusable. We decided after years of savings to finally take go ahead and build our outdoor living environment and also to have something to use when our family visits us at the end of September. When we spoke to Mark this was a CLEAR definitive requirement that this project had to finish no later than 9/21, but he guaranteed us that three weeks tops would be the time frame needed. It's now 9/27 well over two months after the fact and still we are incomplete. Mark stated to me that we would be finished on 9/21/12 and this date was completely missed! Mark Watson is a LIAR and has never been honest with us throughout the project! Firstly, the guy rarely picks up his phone. He always communicates via text messaging and simply does NOT do his job! He does NOT have a group of trusted subcontractors either. ALL OF HIS UPDATES AND TIMELINES FAILED TO GET MET. He would always schedule subcontractors to come do work at our home and they wouldn't show, would cancel last minute, or come days after the fact. Yet the entire time he blamed his subcontractors and made them seem unreliable when it was him all along!!!
The project started off okay and he collected 10% to kick off the permit process. It took over two weeks to get approval and he blamed the city for the delay. It didn't seem abnormal so we went along with it. We got to the point that we thought he wasn't being honest with us and we decided to show up to the City of Frisco Building Inspections Office and low and behold he was there with his kids waiting to pick up our permit package, which was finally approved. He came to our home that day and told us that he had been going through some grief with his wife, who was "supposedly" cheating on him and sleeping with other men. Anyhow, I told him that I understand that is tough and we had compassion for him due to this so forgave his past misgivings and gave him an additional 40% deposit according to our contract agreement. Well, the situation got worse after that. He would send over subcontractors to get work done for the plumbing, but they SUCKED and it was clear that they didn't know what they were doing. I ended up hiring my own contractor for the plumbing aspect of the project and went direct to them for this work. Finally, after the plumbing was completed Mark requested that the concrete company go out to my home and setup the concrete forms. Well, it took them nearly two weeks to do this! Finally, when they showed they did a TERRIBLE job of setting up the forms. After some back and forth and PLENTY OF COMPLAINING TO MARK the concrete was finally poured and it looked like we were finally making progress. Keep in mind that the completion of the concrete slab was done on 8/30/12 and we signed our contract on 7/18/12. So it took nearly 6 weeks to just put down our slab.
Now some of you may be wondering why I didn't just give up and turn away at this point. However, when you've handed over 50% (Approx. $15K) of your money you're already vested into the project not to mention that you have an unusable yard due to all the construction. It's difficult to turn away and risk losing it all so you just hope that things turn out for the better. So I figured I still had enough time to get the project done so we dealt with the pain. Well, the situation didn't improve and just got worse. While Mark would manage to call us once a day (IF THAT) he would give us schedules that were simply NEVER met. We would constantly call him and he would reschedule, but again his subcontractors were UNRELIABLE! They would say they would be onsite and show up when they felt like showing up. Anyhow, we limped along and as the arbor got built, the seating area completed, and the kitchen frame delivered we were almost there. As these major milestones were being completed I was giving Mark construction draws according to our contract and receiving lien releases as well. So now we are quickly running out of time and we hit the 9/21 project completion date. Needless to say we missed it! I complained and yelled at Mark via voicemail, text, email, etc. but he completely ignored us. Days went by and we didn't hear anything from him and then he finally reappeared again to tell me his wife took off to Washington state with his kids and he was chasing after them. I managed to get him to send me the name of the Granite Installation contract since the granite was to be installed on 9/24, but I became immediately concerned when he accidentally sent me a text where he replied to the Granite owner and stated that he didn't have enough money to cover the granite expenses required for the order. My heart fell to my stomach when I read this! My wife who was pregnant throughout this entire experience started crying and we knew something was very wrong.
We started doing our research over the weekend and quickly found information about this guy like the fact that he was arrested on 9/04 for unpaid toll violations which exceeded $26K for 985+ violations. We also found out that he had a federal lien of $12K+ on his last physical address, where he no longer resided. His wife, Sheri Lynn Watson, also had a lien from the state of Texas under her name for $2K+. So it became apparent to us that Mark Watson had a Ponzi scheme going and spent all of our money on everything, but the project. This completely put into perspective the reality that he was moving things along as he got the money to do it since he spent all the money we gave him. While we still had a balance of $2K on the contract owed to him we realized it wasn't enough to cover the damages he left us. Wha
