This was vey messy project and the guys did make efforts to clean up some each day. My house was barely livable for a few days as I was confined to the Master bedroom/bath with minimal access to the kitchen. There was dust everywhere. They guys didn't do very well in hauling off garbage and, since I have one small city issued garbage can, I had to find a local dumpster to get rid of the overflow.
There were items that were missing from the original Contract which ended up costing me more money. One of the bathrooms was painted the wrong color which they did repaint. The project ended up taking a few days longer because they alsoforgot to stain the cabinets in the bathrooms.
They workers did not always promptly to the job at 8:00 a.m. which resulted in my being late to work several times.
Overall, the quality of the work was good and the guys were nice. The may have done better if they had better supervision.
There are minor issues with the paint and cabinetry such as vanity drawers not being uniform, a door painted on one side and not the other, a door jamb not painted and paint on door knobs and light fixtures. The major issue is the tile. It is was to be laid in a herringbone pattern with the tiles butted close together with only a 1/8and quot; grout line and the entire floor was to be sealed. It was emphasized that the tiles had to be perfectly flat and level as two family members have walking problems. Well the grout lines vary from 1/4and quot; - 1/2and quot; in places and almost all of the tiles have one end higher than the other. Tables and chairs wobble, furniture won't slide without catching on a bumped up tiles and it is very uncomfortable to walk across in bare feet. Some tiles are so sharp they almost cut your feet, others can cause us to stumble. Manuel admitted that he was going to Mexico and picking up laborers that he had never used and didn't know their skills. The capper of this was when I replaced my refrigerator (that they dented) and couldn't get it to slide out. It had been shoved into the space over wet tile which buckled and some of the tiles had popped up as much as 2and quot; on the sides. Additionally the outlet cover was laying in the floor and the refrigerator was plugged into a bare outlet -- a fire hazard? The installer of the new refrigerator took pictures and said he'd never seen a worse job. He tugged on one tile and it came up with just a hand tug; only half of that tile had thin set and it was completely loose.
Additionally, some of the workers scratched my car, dented the refrigerator, and stole two brooms and a case of paper towels. When Norma called and asked if Steven could pick up the final check ($1800), I asked if Doug would come by instead because I wanted to show him these things. That was last summer and I'm still waiting to see him and I still have the $1800.
I'm really not sure of how much I paid for this job. I think Doug got about $30,000. I bought most of the materials, fixtures and plumbing supplies and think that the total job was in the neighborhood of $40,000.
I saved for years to have this done and wanted it done by the best in town. Now I'm saving to have it re-done and wonder who really is the best in town.
"I did meet with the members at their home one time. They were not exactly sure what they wanted to do, so I offered some possible suggestions which they were interested in. I was preparing their estimate and the member called me and said they had some other ideas as well. I asked him to let me know when they were ready, but I hadn't heard from him until I read this report today. They seemed very nice and I am disappointed we couldn't meet up again. I hope every thing works out well for them and their project."
"I visited with the customer and they mentioned they were leaving town for a few days. It took several days to locate the same size & color of their hard to match tile. I did email the proposal and have made several attempts via telephone. As of the date of this response, they have not answered the telephone. I have left 3 or 4 messages. Today is October 22, 2010. The proposal has been ready since October 12, 2010. Perhaps they were having a bad day, out of town, when they posted their report. Please check my references. Thank you."
"We also installed an energy efficient roofing system and completed various other projects for Ms. [member name removed] after she posted this report."
