Mr. Kerlin came out, assessed the problem, and then used a hinge from another gate of the same type (one that was damaged and of no further use) to replace the broken part. Afterwards, he went on to level the post, and add brackets and bolts to further secure both the post and gate. I've had problems over the years with this particular gate coming off the hinges, and Mr. Kerlin explained to me that this problem was caused by the gate hinges being improperly installed to begin with. Much to my relief he corrected that problem as well.
I have utilized Mr. Kerlin's services on a number of occasions over the years. In addition to the front gate, he has also done extensive work on my house and barn, and I continue to be amazed at his creativity in solving problems. I have never been disappointed in his work and always turn to him when repairs are needed.
I highly recommend him.
I have contacted Mr. Kerlin on several occasions over the years and have always found him to be honest, trustworthy, and highly skilled. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone needing repair and/or remodeling work done.
Dennis did what he could to hold the cost down. He hand mixed the paint for the fascia using paint he had and it was almost a perfect match for a 40+ year old house. He had some spare singles so he was able to repair the small area that was broken without having to buy a whole package. I was very pleased with everything he did. I had no problem trusting him to do the work.
I would definitely hire him again and recommend him.
Exterior door re-stain was done with spray can rather than by stripping old wood stain and refinishing. A cursory job at best. Door will have to be refinished in 12 months or less.
Interior walls paint was well done but window sills were botched and less than satisfactory. He used a flat instead of enamel and brush painting work was sloppy beyond words. He splattered paint all over the floors as he did not use drop cloths. It was obvious that he wanted to finish work quickly and quality was not a concern to him.
Beyond the work, I did not appreciate the racial jokes he insisted on telling but did not say anything to him for fear of further repercussions in his work.
I would not recommend him for ANY paint job, and would ask for specific details of the materials to be used and how he intends to do the work before contracting him.
Personally, I would not hire him again.
He's very easy to talk to and puts you at ease from the get go. I like the man; he's just plain folks, if you know what I mean.
I had contacted Dennis on April 29 and said I was needing work done prior to May 8. He came out first thing the morning of May 2, we agreed on a price, and he started that afternoon. It took him through most of the next afternoon to complete the work. He worked largely unsupervised. The house was vacant, and I gave him a code to use for the combo lock so he could come and go as needed.
When Dennis first came out to see what needed to be done, he offered a price option: he could either charge one set fee for everything or a set fee for labor plus reimbursement for needed materials. I chose the later option as I thought it more fair for both of us. That was principally because it was going to be difficult to determine how much plywood to buy for the attic flooring as it would have to be cut into so many odd sizes.
I always appreciate it when workers come with all the tools they need to do a repair job (my experience has been that is not always the case). When Dennis came out to begin work, he arrived not just with a usual pickup truck but also with a large trailer filled wiith tools and equipment.
Replacement of the serving shelf was the most skilled task. The shelf that came with the house was only deep enough to hold drink glasses. Dennis replaced it with a wooden shelf deep enough to hold dinner plates and serving trays. He also cut a decorative trim around the sides of the shelf (his idea) making it look much better than the original which was purely rectangular in shape. I was concerned that some small child might try to use the shelf for pull ups. Dennis braced it well, and it seems strong enough to hold a good amount of weight.
When my wife and I inspected his work as he was finishing up, we found everything done exactly as requested. Nothing was overlooked or needed to be touched up. We also discovered Dennis has a great memory. He immediately remembered my wife from a church she attended 30 years ago and could name many of the people acrtive in the church at that time who she knew.
Dennis says his wife has been after him for many years to retire. I hope he continues to resist that as I will definitely call on him first for work on future projects.
- It was a very good experience.
