Richard promptly came out and gave me a quote. The price was reasonable at $3600 for the installation of a 16" culvert and concrete slabs before the culvert and entering the grass covered driveway after crossing. We staked the culvert crossing and driveway entry slab (12ft slab after crossing the culvert) and discussed the installation in detail as I wanted to ensure the driveway entry slab was angled to avoid two large trees, approximately 15ft away. As I work overseas I asked him to set the pour date when my wife was home and to ensure she was ok with the final positioning once the rebar and forms were set.
The work did not go well. Richard refused to schedule the pour when she was available and told her that the forms and rebar work were "all set", and that he was not going to change anything as he already had a crew scheduled. He basically steamrolled her. When I returned from my work rotation it was apparent the last driveway slab was installed wrong. The culvert crossing was ok but the driveway slab was routed directly into the center of the trees "I WAS TRYING TO AVOID"
It is apparent that Richard and AAA Concrete need close supervision and they will take little direction or cooperation from a woman. I did have a conversation with Jay Davis, Owner of AAA Concrete. As they had already been paid by my wife, I offered to help compensate the correction in their work by breaking up the 12' slab and re-pouring in the right direction. He quoted me an exorbitant $3500 for this work and said that AAA Concrete was not at fault. When I told him I was going to report this on Angie's List (where I got the reference) he began argued and hung up.
I had the repairs done by another firm and the remedial work cost $2000.
I contacted Richard over the Christmas holidays in 2013. I happened to be traveling down to my house and he met me the same day we talked. He has been in business for over 40 years and I could tell right away he was a master of his craft and took pride in his work. I told him what I wanted done, he wrote down all of the specifics and measurements and got back to me with a quote the following week. I asked if his labor would be hired off the street or if he has steady employees. He indicated some of his employees have been with him 25 years. This was a good sign. I got one other quote that came out about the same. So since I had met him in person I decided to use AAA Concrete.
He poured the driveway and slab in mid May and it looks great. He gave me a recommendation on a contractor for the garage enclosure. His recommendation of CD Home Services was spot on.
I would recommend and use AAA Concrete again.
They were sensitive to our requirements and very helpful and took time answering our questions and concerns.
They got the job done efficiently and skillfully as expected and for the cost that was quoted.
I would definitely recommend these folks and would use them again should the need arise.
Their workers arrived on time and we went over the specifics of the job. They took time to find our sprinkler system lines and we moved the project a foot one direction to avoid the sprinker lines (which was greatly appreciated! Future repairs will be much easier than if the line were under the concrete). They capped off the one sprinkler that needed to be removed and used a backhoe to clear the site. We found a large old stump just a couple of inches under the surface that needed to be removed and they dealt with that.
The specs of the job required: - Remove and Haul off existing grass / dirt.- Replace w/ 4” 3000 psi concrete.- #3 rebar MAT 16” O.C.E.W.- Drill and Tap existing concrete w/ #3 rebar dowels.- Buggy concrete from street.
I was also pleased that they insisted upon using a buggy to bring the concrete in from the street as they didn't want to damage my existing drive or go across my lawn. The other bidders did not bring this up in their proposals. Care was taken to slope the pad properly so water runs off the correct way maintaining the drainage of the property. The project turned out quite well and we are very pleased.
