Pete gave me a price of $5,000 to complete renovations started by a person from whom we bought the house, and he said he'd get permits for the work. Once he started (he didn't really get started until after he was supposed to have finished the job), he never got permits, presented me with bills for $8100 when he still had a LOT left to do (I purchased materials, so it wasn't going for that), claimed he'd paid his subcontractors over twice as much as he actually paid them, and walked off the job with the $6500 I paid him, leaving the job incomplete. At the beginning, he said he'd get right to the work and have it finished completely within a week to two weeks. He was almost never there. Most days, nobody showed up. At the end of a month, he still had done less than half of the job. I will NEVER use Pete Lopez again or recommend him to anyone else to use!!! I'm sorry that I gave him a good recommendation before. I hope this hasn't happened to anyone else as a consequence of my former recommendation.

The most unprofessional I have ever dealt with! Would not listen to what I want. It's his way and his way only. I used Pete because he had done a pretty good job for a friend. However, she just let him do whatever he thought was best. Whereas, in my case, I have a clear idea of what I like the finished product to look like. I was courteous and polite at all time, however, I believe that when I hire a professional that they should hear out what I want done and give me their professional opinion if what I want is not feasible or if they have a better idea. I found out later that Pete?s ego needs a lot of stroking and unless you are ready to do that and let him have free rein with your project, I would NOT recommend him. Pete knocked a hole in the wall putting in the upper shelf but failed to mention it to me when he was paid. I found it a couple of weeks later when I was up in a ladder painting. The shelving job is not much better either. He knew that I want adjustable shelves so I could add/remove shelves as needed; however, when the job is done, the shelves were difficult to remove. It would have work fine if the spacing are 1/8? further apart or the cleats he cut are slightly narrower. When I talked to Pete about it, he said I am the one that asked for a 7? spacing. I do have diagrams with measurement drawn using a closet organizer software but the measurements are based on the assumption that removable pegs are used, not stationary cleats. Regardless, if he has talked to me about the need to adjust the spacing or just do it, I would be completely okay with it since the goal is the removable aspect, not the exact 7? spacing. The wall shelf job is even worse. I like to have the wall shelf under a window that has the cat win-door. He suggested removing the window trim to install it. Since I know I might want to remove the win-door and the shelf in the future and might not be able to match the trim, I asked him to keep the trim and install the shelf under the trim. However, when I came home, I not only found the trim in three pieces and several screws sticking out from under the shelf (see photo).

I bought an old house that needed a lot of repair and updating. A contractor I had used before was not available for at least a month. A tiler I knew suggested Pete. I called him and he came over within a few days. He told me how he could improve on my ideas while saving me money. For example, I was going to remove a wall to open up a living room, but he told me it would be better to remove the door and make the opening match a wide opening to the dining room on the other end of the living room. He did this and repaired the hardwood floor and it looked great! As I saw the quality of his work, the job expanded to a much longer list. He often suggested things he could do. He critiqued my ideas and told me I shouldn t do some of them. We compromised many times, but more often we went with his ideas. In most cases, his ideas turned out to be better than what I d imagined. When I did prefer to go with my idea, he didn t always take it well. He also seemed to have some issues in getting what he wanted across to his subcontractors. He was a perfectionist with what they did and would sometimes make them redo it until they got it the way he wanted it. He would occasionally disappear on me for a few days without warning, but he was better than most I ve used about staying with the job to the end, especially given the way the list expanded after he got started on the job.
