When I called Scott we made an appointment for an on-site
visit. Because of the age and condition of the tree I initially wanted the tree
cut down and the stump ground down, which would have put the cost of the total
project to around $1,800. However, because he is a Certified Arborist, he
determined that by cutting out just the dead limbs and branches, and by
selectively pruning the remaining live branches and reshaping the tree, that we
could enjoy its expansive shade and lower electric bills for another five
years. That would bring the project cost down to around $800. Who said it would
cost more to hire a Certified Arborist versus just a shade tree mechanic (play on
words intended)?
Clayton Geer was the tree climber of the crew who did an
excellent job of cutting out the dead wood and selectively pruning/thinning-out
the live branches without compromising any beneficial shade. The pruning
allowed the remaining branches to get more of the tree?s nourishment. To avoid
any communication problems/misunderstandings between myself and the estimator
(who is Scott, the owner), and the estimator and his crew, I had Clayton, the
project Foreman, sign a copy of my Work Instructions (project details) after we
walked over the work site.
Sean did an excellent job of cutting the bushy trees and the
bushes as close to the ground as possible. He was the primary ?chipper? of the
crew.
Aaron helped whenever and wherever he was needed, being the
primary hauler of the dead wood to the chipper.
They all did a totally adequate job in cleaning up the remaining debris
in the yard, as well as in the street where the chipping was done.
I thank Clayton, Sean, and Aaron for a job well done.
The selection process began when I e-mailed the owner, Scott Geer,
an invitation to bid on the project, which I described in detail, along with
several digital pictures. The pictures showed the Maple tree, the
smaller bushy trees, and the bushes. That was all the information that was
needed for the several tree service companies I contacted, to submit a
preliminary e-mail bid without having to first visit the house to see
and hear what needed to be done. (I imported the pictures from my digital
camera into the Kodak EasyShare software that I had on my laptop. After
composing the text of the project details into Google Chrome e-mail
format, I clicked and dragged the pictures from Kodak EasyShare into the
Google e-mail format.) Only after I got their e-mail replies, did I call
them and give them my phone number; if they weren't interested enough,
and technically capable enough, to first commit to a documented e-mail
reply to my request for a bid, then they were too loosey-goosey for my
business (think fly-by-night outfits, or bureaucratic companies that are too
big/arrogant for good customer service at all levels of their departments).
