Response from ATKINSON ENGINEERING INC
"Thank you, Mr. [Member Name Removed], for the kind review, but we don't deserve it. I searched our project files and billing records and found no record of you as a client. After researching the previous home addresses you provided Angie's List, I did find that Atkinson Engineering consulted at one of your previous addresses. That work was done in 1996--yes, 20 years ago--but the client was an insurance company and the property owners were different. If you may find some of the paperwork, that would help me understand what happened, and perhaps explain why you rated us "C" in responsiveness. Best wishes, G. D. "Tim" Atkinson"

It went well! If I ever have to vet a house before purchasing, I will definitely call Atkinson Engineering, again!

When purchasing a new home the inspector noted 2 items that made me uneasy, and suggested I hire a structural engineer to look at them.  One was the foundation because of a 2 inch drop and some minor cracking, the other was an issue with stone veneer.
I found Tim through a google search, and he was luckily available in a few days to come and inspect the house.  He was punctual, professional, thorough and well worth his fee.  As we went through the house he explained what he was looking for, finding, and what it meant.  The foundation settlement turned out to not be an issue (I wonder what a foundation repair company would have told me), but the veneer was unstable and is an issue that will have to be addressed.

Tim did an outstanding job inspecting our home that was under contract.  His candor, detail and decades of expertise saved us from buying a money pit, teardown.  Tim even explained to us why the house, even if the foundation repair company had leveled the house properly -- which they did not -- the house would have ongoing problems - shifting, cracks, etc.
Tim showed us the geological map of Austin, explaining that although most areas of Austin are built on clay, the house where we were looking to buy, was built on Del Rio clay, a problematic area for a house or anything that you would like to stand still (like roads, buildings, etc.).  Tim also pointed out that the roads in that neighborhood were patched and bumpy - another indication for us to better understand what we would be dealing with on an on-going basis.
In addition, Tim provided an excellent report, clearly documenting the issues with the house, along with the issues we would likely continue seeing, based on environmental factors (i.e. droughts, wet periods).
Tim is pleasant to work with, punctual, ethical, and has inspected over 3,300 houses in the Austin area.  Tim also explained his past experience when things got "ugly", and he was called upon to testify in legal suits.  Tim has experience, both as a knowledgeable registered professional engineer, and in presenting his findings in court cases.  Tim is extremely knowledgeable of central Texas geology, along with appropriate engineering analysis of homes and other structures that are built in this area.
