I had unusually (possibly unreasonably) high standards and expectations for the finish on my cabinets, because I'd had it done previously in another state, and it was done to perfection there. That contractor had explained to me that there is a difference between painting and finishing. Finishing is done with lacquer and gives a fine finish, as on fine furniture. Also, by this time I was what they call totally kitchen obsessed. After rejecting the samples of several painters and finishers, I was put in touch with Aero Finish, who actually does fine finishes inside the private jets of millionaires, but had some time to help me out. Owner Marcus Spence came over, he was friendly and professional, I knew immediately he knew what he was doing. We discussed color, gloss level, etc., and he went back and did a sample on a real cabinet door. He was very precise about everything; for example, even though mine was a painted-look finish, he would not do a sample on an already-finished door, it had to be a raw door, so he'd be duplicating the same conditions as my cabinets (raw wood). We agreed on the finish, and then he had to come up with right color. This was not easy, as I knew EXACTLY what I wanted, and i thad to be that. He continued doing samples until he got it the way I wanted it. He was doing this in conjunction with Leslie Schaefer, who is a very fine painter, and their crews came over and taped everything off very carefully. They worked quietly and carefully, nice to have in the house. There was only one night we needed to spend in a hotel because of the lacquer smell. The job was finished in about 4-5 days, and is absolutely beautiful. I wanted the finish to be just slightly distressed, and then very randomly. They gave me exactly what I wanted, and they even put up with my repeated joking about the rub-throughs, when I kept saying, "You missed a spot." The job completely exceeded my expectations. Marcus was easy to work with and his goal was to see that I was happy with the work, which I was. I will use him again.
