I was upset because he didn't estimate it right.  I spoke with both owners and they sent another person out.  The third quote was $20000 more than what the quote was.  So, all three quotes were different and they kept going up in price. My yard had not changed.

Initially, I contacted three contracting companies for estimates on replacing the supports for my carport.  In the process I discovered that the roof also needed to be replaced so I asked all three companies to bid both items and to include replacing some soffit and facia, and to also estimate painting all the wood on the outside of the house.  I told all three contractors that my main concern was for the carport and to please give a great deal of information on their design for replacing the supports.  The existing supports are sinking, and I wanted to feel confident that the new supports would not do the same.  My complaints about D&J Construction and Roofing are all about their estimates for the roof because that is essentially all they estimated.  The only item on their estimate for the carport was for 2 posts totaling $34.  I suspect that they are mostly a roofing company and I would question their qualifications for other contracting jobs.  When I received their first estimate it was obvious they had overbid the roof.  They had separated the carport roof from the house, estimating the roof for the house at 41 SQ and the carport roof at 50 SQ for a total of 91 SQ!  I called the estimator and pointed out that the carport roof was not larger than the roof on the house.  He said he would look into it and get back to me that afternoon.  He did not get back to me.  I left two or three messages at his office.  Several days later I talked to the estimator again.  He said he would call me back that afternoon.  He did not call.  The next day I called the office and asked the receptionist to speak with the owner of the company.  She said he was in a meeting and I left a message for the owner to call me.  I did not receive a call from the owner.  However, the estimator did call and left a voicemail apologizing for not calling back, and I did receive a new estimat in my email that reduced the carport roof estimate to 18 SQ for a total of 59 SQ for the entire roofing job.  This was still a gross overbid for a 2100 sq. foot house, even with a carport.  The other two contractors estimated my roof at 37 SQ total.  I called the office at D&J again and talked to the owner about the discrepancies in his bid when compared with the other bids I had in hand.  He told me he was using approved software for the size of the roof, and I told him that my roof didn't change size depending on software.  I told him that I was calling as a courtesy to inform him that I would be giving a negative review to the  Better Business Bureau and to Angie's List.  He asked if I was trying to ruin his company and I replied that, No, I was trying to protect other consumers.  I will be happy to provide the estimates I received from D&J Construction and Roofing to verify my statements.
