The crew at Killeen Glass and Mirror are wonderful. We have an eight foot long floor to ceiling mirror in our dining area. While moving some furniture, we accidently broke the glass plate covering the electric outlet. The mirror is somewhere between 25-30 years old. We were so concerned that we would not be able to replace the electric cover because it had been custom cut to fit up against a beveled edge seam on the mirror. Killeen Glass and Mirror, using the broken plate as a pattern, were able to custom cut a new plate to fit. Everyone was friendly, professional and helpful. They provided guidance that when we reinstalled the new glass cover to ensure that we didn’t tighten it too much or the plate would break. Overall, yes I would use them again and recommend to anyone.
The mirror itself has scratching at one corner and wasn't properly protected when it was cut.
The installer was either in a big rush or just does a slip-shod job on a regular basis. I can't be sure which. There were studs available for the brackets which he chose not to use (I would want a mirror this size and with this orientation to be secured properly - and properly for me means in the studs). He probably didn't want to use the studs because it would have actually taken some kind of equipment and more than 1 minute to install.
What he did was briefly measure - marking the drywall with the point of screwdriver - then use the screwdriver to pound a hole into the wall for a drywall anchor. Then he turned the screwdriver over to use the back of it to push in the drywall anchor. He made several measure marks with the point of his screwdriver that are behind the mirror but will be plainly visible when we pull it down to sell the house. Why he couldn't take the 5 seconds to use a pencil is beyond me and indicates that these people aren't used to dealing with retail customers and installs.
So but whatever, the guy was in a rush and I can fix the wall. I can also just move the brackets into studs. But here is the breakdown for the install on the ticket I received:
36x72: $117.00
ppm: $9.65
sc (service charge): $100
$6.50 a sq/ft isn't a terrible price for mirrors. The $117 makes sense to me. I don't know what ppm means - perhaps the cost to cut the larger sheet down to size. But the service charge? $100? It's too high. Especially considering the service we received.
The guy traveled from Killeen Glass and Mirror to our address in Temple. 26 miles - or 33 minutes according to Google Maps. So assuming I'm responsible for the round trip - call it one hour + 5 minutes to install. $100 an hour for a slipshod install and delivery is pretty absurd if you ask me.
Would I use these guys again? No. The mirror itself was scratched in one corner. Not a deal-breaker - but someone out there will do a better job. The install was sloppy, rushed, and overpriced. If I was forced to use this company again (and there are others, so why do that? - I chose this one because they had good Angie's List reviews) - then I would make sure to pickup the mirror myself and install it myself. I would end up with a better install and save myself $100. I'm going to have to move the whole thing in any case - *and* touch up the wall.
We have this amazing 21st century technology known as a pencil. You can erase it and everything.
