Jewelry Sales/Design/Repair
I trust the jeweler not to switch out stones. This was my main concern.
The appraisal took 3 weeks.
A very nice booklet was prepared with a picture of each item and its appraisal.
The big mistake I made was not to get an estimate. The appraiser said it was by the hour ($175) and could take a few hours depending on how much equipment had to be used and other issues. So we ended up paying for about 51 hours, which is 4 hours per item. One item had to have the stone removed, so it could have taken a lot of time and effort.
I was shocked at the total. It was at least double what I was expecting. It may have been fair, but several of the pieces were not very valuable and should not have taken more than an hour each. I suspect we paid $175 an hour for the preparation of the booklet. I can't see how it took so long otherwise.
So trustworthy, timely, probably accurate (one piece was 4 times as high as a previous appraisal), but please, get an estimate!
