James and his team did an amazing job remodeling my kitchen. They took my vision and made it come to life. From the 9’ butcher block topped island to the corner pantry that holds tons, they made sure it was exactly what I wanted. Looking forward to future projects!

Be careful if you decide to use J. Martin Company. We contracted with James Martin for a Kitchen & Utility rooms remodel â replace cabinets, countertops, appliances, etc.; downstairs painting; and downstairs floor replacement. We had several issues with the job that have left us with an unsatisfactory experience. James quoted the job and just prior to signing the contract, he stated he had forgotten to include the flooring work in his price and would have to revise his bid. We accepted this and agreed to a revised price. In retrospect this was our first red flag. James estimated the total job length to be 6-8 weeks. The demo of the existing tile and carpeted floor started on Sept 5. We packed up everything in the affected areas, including the kitchen, the week prior. The demo went smoothly and completed in 2 days. The next step was the cabinet demo and replacement. However, James shocked us with the news that he would not be able to start the next step for 2 weeks because his carpenter was tied up on some rework to finish another job with an â unreasonable customerâ . So, we would be waiting an additional 2 weeks with all of our stuff in storage. We were not happy as we felt he should have told us upfront and rescheduled the start of the demo job. He knew but didnâ t tell us. James started to lay the tile in advance of the cabinetâ s installation. The tile was partially laid to be completed once the cabinets were in place. No complaints on the cabinet demo and installation, his carpenter, John, did a good job. The tile was quickly covered with plastic and paper for the painters. We added some additional painting work and contracted directly with the painters for that part. The painting crew consisted of the owner of the painting company, Patrick, and his workers. The work crew did a great job and were very conscientious, however anything that the owner worked on was sloppy. He spent more time denying and making excuses than it would have taken his crew to do it right in the first place. This resulted in lots of rework due to drips, missed areas, rough finish, over spray, etc. This was also the first time that Patrick and James yelled at my wife while I was not there. Not professional. At least painting is easy to fix, but the main problem and issue of contention is the tile install. The tile work was in general sloppy. On my request, levelers were used. Despite that, there are still high and low spots (lippage) in the tile installation. Also, they apparently did not use spacers as the grout lines vary from less than 1/8â to more than 1/4â . Some tile was even installed with the grain in the wrong direction and many tiles are chipped. The main issue, however, is with the grout. It was supposed to be a dark brown, but is a chalky, milky white in most places due to incorrect mixing and application. We contacted the grout manufacturer regarding this. How will this grout hold up over time? No one seems to know for sure, but it is at risk. So, our options are: remove and replace the floor, remove and replace the grout and risk damaging the tile, or stain the grout and hope for the best. James said he would only stain the grout. The grout man he sent to the house had concerns about the integrity of the grout and said it should be evaluated before proceeding with staining. Upon receiving this news, James angrily came to our house while I was not there and yelled at my wife a second time for 30 minutes. She repeatedly had to ask him to stop and then to leave. Again, very unprofessional. At this point it is mid-December and James Martin has walked away from the job. We are left to get the grout issue resolved on our own. Buyer beware.

"Hello John. I?m sorry you had a bad experience with us. As our other reviews indicate, it?s rare for us to have a dissatisfied client. Our goal is to provide the best experience possible. I appreciate your detailed feedback and will bring it to the attention of James (the owner) and see what we can do to rectify the situation. Sincerely, Allie Martin, Business Manager"

James has just completed our kitchen cabinet refresh including dinette and laundry room. He also remodeled and painted our honey oak built ins in the den. We were impressed with his knowledge, good communication and skilled team of cabinetry, carpenter, and painters. Each one of them went above and beyond to make our project really special and personal. We love our “new” home and can highly recommend James Martin!

James and his team did exceptional work and provided equally exceptional customer service. They were in regular contact with me regarding schedule, logistics, and next steps, arrived timely or advised of delays, and were always polite, respectful, and professional. It was also clear that James has built a strong team as the trades that did work in the home (plumbing, stone, and painters) worked seamlessly with his primary PM and had excellent rapport with one another. My experience with his suppliers during the selection process (stone, tile, and fixtures) was equally impressive. Further, his pricing was more than competitive and explained in detail during the initial phase of the process. I am extremely pleased with the final products that included a complete refresh of my master bath and tile work in a guest bath. I would not hesitate to work with James and his team again and recommend him to others, which I have already done.

It cost a bit more than quoted..it was good work but more cost than I had figured. His "Foreman" was a little not dependable. The framers, roofers, concrete guys were amazing. Painters were great too. Had to contact him several times about workers not closing the back gate when they would leave...we have dogs. They did great work. Looks amazing.

J. Martin Company has completed 3 projects for me and I could not be more pleased with their work. They remodeled my kitchen, master bathroom, & built custom bookshelves for my reading room. From the initial contact I had with them through the end of the projects they were proactive in their communication, upfront about costs involved, and trustworthy. They weren’t the lowest bid but one of the reasons I went with them was because of the amount of detail James provided in my estimate. I was also impressed that he didn’t use hard pressure sales tactics or try to upsell me through the process. The first project J. Martin Company did for me was my kitchen which included wallpaper removal, drywall, texture, painting and trim, backsplash, wood flooring, new sink, & cabinet hardware. Everyone who came into my home was respectful of my family, our dogs, and property. I was impressed how everyone worked together in their various roles. All of the sub contractors were on time and cleaned up very well. The kitchen was completed in about 3 weeks, which was much quicker that what I expected. A few months later I decided to call them back to do my master bathroom remodel. It involved cabinet refinishing, wall paper removal, painting, new countertops, new fixtures, plumbing, & lighting. I really appreciated the help Allie offered during the selection process. She did a great job providing suggestions to stay within budget. She even went with me to shop for the sink, faucets, countertops, lighting, etc. and the experience was extremely efficient. My bathroom was completed in about 4 weeks. The third project J. Martin Company did for me was custom bookshelves for my reading room. Their cabinetry is hands down the finest quality available. One thing worth pointing out is the cabinet maker they used for my bookshelves. It was custom designed by Champion Cabinets. I noticed in a previous review that someone mentioned being displeased with their cabinets which were done by a different sub-contractor, Vine & Branches. Apparently, there is a big difference in quality because the cabinets they did for me through Champion are top-notch. All in all I enjoyed working with J. Martin Company. Each project they completed for me was completed within budget and agreed upon timeframes. I plan to use J. Martin Company for my future remodeling needs and would recommend them to anyone looking to get a project done. They are very good at what they do and are a pleasure to work with.

I hired J Martin for a kitchen remodel, based on the positive survey feedback on HA and quick response on my quote. I’m not sure how they have the rating they do, as my overall experience was NOT GOOD. in fact, I would say it landed on the horrible side. They quoted 3 weeks to complete the remodel and it took 3 months. Communication for everything was done by text messaging, which is impersonal and proved ineffective. Sub-contractors were not managed, no quality control and everything had to be done multiple times. They did a hard sell on the cabinets, which is my biggest compliant. Poor quality, terrible installation and no touch up. Cabinets are inconsistent color, not the finish I purchased and during the installation they scratched / dinged most of them and did not provide any touch up at the end of the job. My advice, skip this contractor and go to the next one if you are in the market for a kitchen remodel. The cabinet sub-contractor was Vine Branch and if you run into them on any bid, run away…FAST. The Home Depot or anyone that can spell ‘cabinets’ will provide a better quality product.
Response from J Martin Company
"I?m sorry you had a bad experience with us. As our other reviews indicate, it?s rare for us to have a dissatisfied client. We take full responsibility for our poor choice in sub-contracting Vine & Branches to do the cabinets in your kitchen. Our existing cabinet maker was back logged at the time & we thought it would be a good time to utilize another one who had been pursuing us. This turned out to be a mistake which we regret. We did everything we could to make things right including correcting their mistakes at our expense. Unfortunately, the corrections took time which delayed the completion of your kitchen remodel well beyond what we originally promised. We realize how frustrating it must have been for you to endure being without the use of your kitchen for 3 months and deeply discounted your final bill. In the end, your kitchen turned out beautiful and we continue to stand by our warranty should you have any concerns. We hope that the new memories you create in your kitchen will replace those that were made while it was being remodeled."

Beware. My 2-3 week project turned into 8. There were days when you had no idea if anyone was showing up or not. Some days no one would arrive until after 11am. The work they did, when they did it, was good quality. They just have bad time management

From start to finish the project was handled in the most professional manner. All of our opinions and concerns were valued and addressed. The various crews were wonderful to work with and extremely polite and caring. From Mr. Martin on down, everyone was respectful of our property and our time. The biggest bonus was that we came in under budget...something that was important to me! I would not hesitate to recommend them to friends/family, and if the opportunity arises, I will use them again.

FANTASTIC caring, and EXTREMELY HIGH QUALITY! Fair price.too! J. Martin company finished 2 weeks early! Kevin, our project manager did a GREAT job in making James Martin's plans come to life! Several people who have been by can't believe the room was an "addition", not part of original construction of the house. The roofline, the bricking and details inside and out make it impossible to tell it was added on. We were amazed there was no need to move out of our master bedroom, that the new room is attached to--they waited until the room was complete and secured before cutting through the wall. Looking forward to using them again soon!!

We hired J. Martin in March to enclose a porch 10 x 12 and have a Murphy bed with cabinets and desk built in, since they told us they could do that too. It took them 14 weeks when they said 5 to 6. The quality of the construction was great. Unfortunately, the subcontractor JM used for the cabinets was horrible. The quality and problems with them has made this project a nightmare. JM had integrity and tried to fix them. Unfortunately the result is not satisfactory. At times there was luck of communication too. So I guess if you just want construction I will recommend them. But not for cabinet or built ins!!

j martin co. was a fairly good co. raised the price when they saw what the insurance adjuster alloted for the roof. thought that was a kind of a rip off. put on a new roof desighn so can't really how that works yet.
Response from J Martin Company
"We have no idea what Mr. P is talking about. Frankly, we did the roof for "Below" the full insurance adjusted totaled amount, per code and to his full satisfaction. There were no amounts raised. In fact the man got a $5,300.00 ins. adjustment and we did the job for $5,000.00 even (and upgaded his roof). Its ashame we get a 3 star for such a good project. I will plan to dispute the above rating and hope there is understanding with service magic, that there are some people you just can't please. Thanks, James"
