Late 2012: I noticed the grout and shower looks WORSE than when they originally came out. I called 3 times. Once Chris said he would come out - and never did. On the second and third calls, messages were left, but no response.
February 2013: I email Chris and get this response. "I'm sorry, I can't help you. Dallas is just too far out for me at this time." So he gladly would take my $575 - and drive in from Keller. But when I ask for a follow-up check-in, and even offer to pay for his help, well suddenly Dallas is out of his territory.
March 2013: The Grout Medic stopped in today. The quoter's comments? "Your last grout people applied the caulk over a dirty shower - thus the bacteria/mold came right through it and destroyed the caulk." In my 2012 phone conversation with Chris he stated it was my fault, for cleaning it with the wrong chemicals.
I wouldn't waste your money and time with these folks. They do lackluster work - and then refuse to stand behind it. In fact, Groutworx was the reason I joined Angie's List - so I wouldn't make a mistake like this again.
us what he could do and gave us an estimate.
He and his partner arrived at the scheduled time.
They removed the tiles with cracks and filled in the crack in the foundation.
We had some tiles we had saved after we had the tile put in originally so
they used those to replace the cracked tiles and put new grout in between the new tiles.
They also put a new seal on when they reattached the toilet. They did a very good job.
Chris, who I believe is the owner, responded to my request for an estimate the same day I called. I had to go to work so he met with my wife and left a somewhat abbreviated written estimate with her. I wanted more detail so I called him with a couple questions. The estimate included a $25 charge for replacing the caulking. I am proficient at caulking so to save a little money I told him that I would do the recaulking. He answered my questions in a rather condescending manner but his price was so much better than others we had received that I went ahead and scheduled the work with him.
Chris and another guy whom he never introduced (apparently his brother) arrived on time. I was at work again but according to my wife they were finished in just a couple hours. When I got home from work I looked at the shower and saw a great deal of residual grout on the walls and even globs of it on the shower floor. My wife said Chris told her it is much easier to wipe off the excess grout when you actually get in and take a shower so they left it for us! By the way, he cashed our check the same day he did the work.
I waited a few days while deliberating whether I even wanted these guys in my house again -- then I decided to clean it myself. I discovered that much of the residual grout was too thick to remove with a sponge in a conventional manner. Worse yet, the more I looked at the walls the more I saw uneven lines and inconsistensies. It was alarming.
I phoned Chris about what I found. When I described it to him he tried to argue with me. I suggested he come by and see for himself. He would not agree to come look at the work. I told him I had taken photos and I would email them to him. He was not interested in that either. In exasperation, I finally told him the work was unacceptable and if I had to I would contact Angie's List and the Better Business Bureau. He said something almost unintelligible and then hung up. I believe what he said was something like "I'll see what I can do."
I never heard from Chris again. Over the next few weeks I called his number 6 or 8 times but never got to speak directly to him. Usually I had to leave a voice mail but on 2 of the calls Chris' father answered the phone. He said he was no longer involved in the business but he would give Chris my message. I never did hear from anyone at Grout Worx even though all I wanted was some touch up.
I started marking the bad spots with blue painter's tape but stopped about halfway through when I finally realized I was not going to get any satisfaction from Grout Worx. I am attaching a photo of the taped spots along with a photo of one of the incomplete places near the ceiling. While doing the work I realized that these guys had not removed ANY of the caulk in the shower in order to repair the nearby grout lines; nor had they removed the faucet trim ring to replair those grout lines.
Considering the two favorable reviews this company had when I first contacted them, it is a mystery why they would do such shoddy work and then leave the job essentially half done. It is even more puzzling why Chris would not come by to look at the problem or even to respond to my calls when the "fix" for a grout company would basically be very minor work.
At this point there is no longer any repair work to be done - I have completed it myself. And based on Grout Worx's failure to respond I do not expect to get a refund of any kind. I am writing this review so that no one else has such a frustrating and disappointing experience as we did with this company.
