Over several weeks, Tom's guys were there every day . . . listening to my design ideas and coming up with a plan. They were communicative and respectful of the property. And . . . I am here to tell you that there are construction crews that clean up after themselves . . . because I have video proof that Tom's crews do just that. It was absolutely a shock to find the work sites neat and clean after a day's work because was I used to my builder's work crews and the tossed lunches, open soda cans, crushed cigarettes and other filth which littered the job site on a daily basis.
Tom's crews did exactly what was discussed . . . in the timeframe that was agreed upon . . . and in the manner upon which it was agreed. Building a large custom home is difficult enough . . . but when you don't trust your builder . . . it becomes a nightmare. After firing my builder from all tiling, backsplashes, carpet, showers and bathrooms . . . Tom took on the tasks expertly and without fail. I could go on and on about Katy Tile & Marble . . . they absolutely SAVED my home from certain future disaster.
I plan to completely tile our master bathroom walls with special order glass mosaic in a few months . . . and the only company that I would allow to perform this work would be Katy Tile & Marble. We worked together every day and Tom Ferris championed my causes. He listened to my ideas and was always supportive and ready to infuse his knowledge into the situation. I am told that I am a very difficult individual to please because I want it right the first time. No second chances. Tom Ferris lived up to his promises and then some.
Katy Tile & Marble (KT&M) is a family owned business. They are very friendly and easy to work with and offered us many suggestions on what to do ... and what NOT to do! Their experience and advice was greatly appreciated and helped make our renovations successful. Linda was especially helpful in helping me select countertop and tile materials.
It took us a while to decide exactly what we wanted to have done in the kitchen. Once we did, I was surprised to learn it would be a month before KT&M could start work. Since this was approaching the holiday season (and everyone wanted to get updates completed before the holidays), I probably shouldn't have been surprised. Lesson learned: They are busy and I need to plan in advance!
We scheduled the tile to be installed first. It was begun and finished on time, but there were a few hiccups. For example we were told the 2 installers would begin work at 8:30 each day (except the first day), but they generally didn't show up until around 9:30. Since this was Thanksgiving week, they understandably had Thursday off. The problem was one of the installers went out of town for Thanksgiving and didn't return Friday as promised. That forced the other man to do all the remaining work, which he did and completed the work on Saturday.
The one real problem we had was with the design and build of the kitchen island. We decided to have KT&M remove 2 smaller islands and replace them with 1 big island. The size and shape of the new island was constrained by the existing gas piping for the stovetop (we did not want to tear into the foundation to move it), a support column that had to stay, and traffic patterns into and out-of the kitchen. I drafted a scale drawing and played with designs until I found 1 that I thought would work. Unfortunately, the cabinet maker did not want to give us an estimate until the old islands had been removed. (This was a little scary as we had no idea what it would cost before we started construction.) Once the old islands had been removed (and the tile installers were laying the new floor), the cabinet maker came to the house and we talked through the design. He made a few suggestions and recommended we increase the length of the new island by 1 foot. Bigger is better, right? So I agreed. A week later (a couple of days later than expected), I received the proposed design. I had a few questions and requested a few changes and sent back the design unapproved. A day or 2 later I received an updated design, but it still wasn't what I requested. At that point I decided to use painter's tape to outline the proposed design on the kitchen floor. It was then I realized the problems that extending the length of the island the extra foot would cause. I explained the issue in an email and asked that the length of the island be reduced by a foot. After several more email exchanges that did not produce the desired results, the cabinet maker came back out and measured the dimensions I laid out on the floor. The net result was a lot of frustration on both sides and a delay in getting the cabinet built. We were without a major part of our kitchen (the stovetop) for more than a month.
That was the downside. The good news is the cabinets turned out well in the end. The men who cut and installed the quartz did a great job and worked over the Christmas holidays to get it installed as quickly as possible for us. There were also a couple of guys who moved electrical outlets, installed our new range hood, moved the lights, and did various other handyman type tasks, and they were FANTASTIC. My husband--who is quite handy with repairs himself--was VERY pleased with their work. The painter who painted our new island cabinets also did a good job.
Overall, I am very pleased with the work KT&M did for us. Some of the problems--like the ones re: the island cabinets--were partially my fault. I obviously did not communicate clearly, and I should have suggested a second face-to-face meeting with the cabinet maker much sooner. The quality of the materials and work KT&M provided was excellent and the results were good, and that is what is most important to me. I am certain what I learned will make future remodeling jobs go more smoothly. In fact we have contracted with KT&M to remodel our master bathroom this year.
"My apologies, however, we do not have your address on file. Could this be a different company. Please let us know. Thank you Katy Tile and Marble"
We turned over the house to Katy Tile while they ripped old tile that was 20 years old and replaced it with the new tile. They had to float the floor prior to installing the new tile. The job was quick and we are very pleased.
