Carpentry – Carpentry work was acceptable, although there were a few issues. Several door trim cuts required Bondo filler due to excessively large gaps. Many holes for cabinet handles were drilled in wrong location or were not required at all. Barn door hanger straps were installed crooked. Sergio had a tendency to drill holes or install wood screws at angles instead of square into wood. Sergio was a little messy, I still have wood drillings in every cabinet in house and pieces of cut wood and sawdust inside my kitchen island. Two interior doors do not lock due to inadequate latch/strike plate engagement. Several door stops were not installed. Electrical – Electrical work was acceptable. Everything works and passed city inspection. Some things to note that I wasn’t happy with. Per city code I am required to install ACFI/GFCI receptacles throughout house. These are more expensive than standard receptacles, therefore a written add-on was added to original proposal. Original proposal contained labor to install receptacles throughout house. The add-on was to provide 53 ACFI/GFCI receptacles at $30 a piece ($1590). Not sure why Atkinson quoted 53 receptacles since there are only 43 electrical outlets ($1290) in my house. Shauna indicated that each lighting circuit does not require 100% ACFI/GFCI receptacles and that Atkinson would only charge me for actual number of ACFI/GCFI receptacles installed, which was 26. Atkinson took the liberty to keep my entire $1590(53 receptacles) even though only 26 ACFI/GFCI receptacles ($780) were required and installed. Close to end of job Atkinson declined to install kitchen island exhaust hood, which was part of original proposal. Atkinson only credited me only $150 for this. I had to have someone else install hood at a cost of $2290.00. Plumbing – Plumbing was acceptable, except for one thing. Plumber could not get sink stopper lever mechanism to function properly in all four bathroom sinks. Plumber added an extension rod to pivot rod, but that didn’t fix problem. He then gave up. I had to finish work myself by adding an additional extension rod to the lift rod. All sink stoppers work fine now. I pay Atkinson to do work and I have to do the work myself, doesn’t seem right. Sheetrock – I am not happy with the sheetrock repairs. Some large holes in sheetrock were repaired by paper/tape and mud instead of installing a new piece of sheetrock. I pushed on a couple of these repairs and the wall flexed and then cracked. Painting – Overall painting of entire house came out good. However, there are a still a few touch-ups I assume I will have to complete myself. Tile Work – Porcelain tile installed in bathrooms and kitchen backsplash required a lot of re-work due to improper grout size and tile layout/placement issues. I spent $545 on new tile and grout for required rework. Atkinson was happy to address most of these issues up to a point. Shauna was very nice to work with while addressing these issues. Improper staggering of mosaic tile joints in both bathrooms and excessive grout due to bad tile cuts remain in place (not fixed). Also, there is a large hollow area under hallway bathroom floor tile that concerns me, since tile may crack due to lack of support. Hollow area on floor was not re-worked, however Shauna indicated that Atkinson would address it if any issues come up. I would have never hired Atkinson for my home remodel if I was aware of the low-quality tile work beforehand. Stonework – Travertine split-face fireplace looks good. Some re-work was required (same person that installed bathroom tile did fireplace). Countertops – Excellent job installing quartz countertops throughout house. Installer knew what he was doing. Flooring – Glued down engineered hardwood flooring installation quality was good. Some things to note. Hardwood floor was installed very tight against porcelain bathroom floor tile resulting in damaged wood along the entire transition. I pointed this out to one of the installers and he did not seem eager to fix. Atkinson indicated he would fix it on 4/30/2021. That was a few months ago and nothing has been done. I e-mailed and called Atkinson, however my attempts to contact Atkinson have not been returned. I assume I have to hire someone else to fix this. Also, there are a couple of large hollow spots in floor. Shower glass- Excellent job installing shower glass. Installer was very meticulous and quality conscious. Add-ons – Atkinson submitted add-on charges at completion of project when I specifically requested that all add-ons be written up with charges prior to starting any add-on work. Here are a few of them. $650 to paint cabinet wood on each side of farmhouse sink. This is about 1 sq ft of wood that painter hand brushed in a couple minutes (I watched him paint it). Painter left white paint on bottom of black farmhouse sink. If Atkinson discussed this add-on with me prior to doing the work I would have told him I would do it myself given the high charge a couple minutes of work. $750 to paint shoe mold trim throughout house. Original proposal included painting of all trim throughout house. Original proposal also included primed white shoe mold trim ready to be painted. I am very surprised this is an add-on given what the original proposal states. $350 minimum trip charge to install two ceiling fans. Original proposal was to install customer’s ceiling fans throughout house. There are a total of five ceiling fans, three were delivered at one time and two were delivered at another time. Obviously, if Atkinson told me they were going charge me extra if all five ceiling fans were installed at the same time, I would have told them to wait until all five fans have been delivered. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Atkinson Flooring and Design to anyone.
