Victory Medical Center Houston is a private boutique hospital in the Medical Center. Our bariatric surgeon, Dr. Yu of TLC, partners with them for surgical facilities and surgical aftercare for his patients.
Each floor at Victory has an astonishingly broad range of care professionals, from nurses to respiratory therapists to physical therapists to patient care advocates. It's a cliche that hospitalized patients just can't get any rest, what with all the nurses coming in every five minutes, and we certainly had lots of staff visits whiie we were there. The nursing staff is obviously very experienced, and they addressed the (minor) issues that arose quickly and efficiently, with an obvious compassion for the patient in every interaction. The teamwork was reassuring; the managing nurse handled squads of specialists with professionalism and courtesy. The respiratory therapist dealt well with the patient's CPAP (and, to be honest, at this point, they have to have seen thousands of them), and the physical therapist was calm and low-key during that first nerve-wracking stroll around the floor.
If this matters, it has to be the most luxurious hospital I've ever been in, all gleaming polished-wood floors, upholstered wingback chairs for visitors, and lovely artwork on the walls of astonishingly large private patient suites. (This extends to the equipment, by the way; they had just gotten brand-new pain management dispensing rigs the week before our visit.) More notable than that, though, is the way they care not just for the patient, but the patient's family; because the patient had just had surgery mandating a liquid diet was no reason not to send in a menu for the member of the patient's party who could eat, and the meals were handled as conscientiously as the rest of the care. (They say they believe that a hospital stay affects the whole family, and you can tell from their courtesy and attention to patient family members and friends.)
The day after surgery, we got a visit from two of the patient advocates, asking if we'd been comfortable and what they could improve. Not too darn much, we have to say!
We had a slight bobble with the billing: it was supposed to be prepaid, but Victory sent us an unexpected bill for a considerable sum and then were not quite able to explain why. TLC got that all straightened out with Victory and we were OK.
It seems likely that one would have occasion to visit Victory only as part of a surgical procedure by a partnering practice, but if you do, you're very fortunate. We were cared for so well that the patient was able to leave the day after laparoscopic abdominal surgery. They're not kidding when they call it and quot;Victoryand quot;.
