I purchased the whole house surge protection special for $175.00. I had priced it through several companies at around $300.00, so I thought it was a great deal. Upon arrival, the electrician informed me my panel box required a new breaker for him to install the system. He was right, so I knew it would cost more as the $175.00 special assumed a standard installation into an open and available breaker. I was prepared to pay for a new breaker, what I was not prepared to pay was the outrageous sum of $600.00. When I refused to pay that much and asked for a refund of what I paid through Angies List, the technician tried to get me to pay a $59.00 "service call fee." All of that said, the technician that arrived at my home was courteous, respectful, and obviously knowledgeable. The technician listened attentively when I told him why I was not going to have the work performed, and agreed without protest to waive the $59.00 fee. It may seem strange, but I WOULD use the company again in the future, with one caveat: It would be for a special much like this one, and any additional work beyond the special would be a non-starter. The electrician showed me their pricing schedule, all of which seemed excessively high. In general I am a "you get what you pay for" guy, but in this instance, I found the quality of the service, while excellent, did not justify the exhorbitant price, outside of what I had already paid.

We are happy to install our great deal on surge protection. In Houston we get an unbelievable amount of lightening strikes that create damaging surges. The repair on surge damaged homes can lead into the thousands of dollars and create problems and service calls for the life of the home. A complete surge protection system, including panel, (The Big Deal), low voltage phone and catv utility is less than $1200 However, we can only install the panel surge unit with a breaker. When your home has no room in the panel for a new breaker we have to create room by installing sub panels or installing special tandem breakers , both of which create added installation costs. If a member at this time is unable to afford adding surge protection to his home, Angies List will refund the Big Deal amount and we NEVER charge a dispatch fee on these types of calls. The tech called in on this job and we notified him of this at the time of the service call.

They should have been here at 2 pm, and then they said 3:30pm, but no one showed. I cancelled the appointment. I felt their travel charge was a little expensive, especially since they weren't going to be doing any work.

We take our appointments very seriously. In fact, if we are late we immediately credit our customers $59. We schedule in two hour windows with a 30 minute notice. Most companies schedule in 4 hour windows or charge extra for 2 hour window, which we do not do. We just schedule for the convience of our customers. We were not late for this customers appoinment. This member scheduled a 2pm to 4pm window. At 10 am that morning we called this member for an earlier apponitment and he said "he was retired and did not want to be disturbed before noon". We then informed him at that time that we would be there at the later part of his appointment window after 3pm. When we called him at 3pm and notified him that his technician was in route, he cancelled because his building would not let anyone work after 5 pm. If this member would have informed us of his schedule constraints, we would have been more than happy to accomodate him.

Definitely professional and stood behind there work went the door bell stopped working 2 weeks after they originally fixed it and fixed it again fro not charge. HOWEVER, their prices are outlandish!!! They charged me $700 to install 2 jacks. Seriously! They gave me a bunch of excuses about how I lived in an old house and they had to ground the wires leading to the jacks which was more work, etc. I had another licensed electrician come to my house and install another jack for $150. He laughed when I told him how much Universal charged me and told me that they ripped me off. I even asked the other electrician about the process he used to ensure that that the wires were grounded, and he assured me that there is only one way to installed a jack that is up-to-code and grounded and it doesn't cost $350 per jack to do that. I won't use Universal again, and I tell everyone never to call them because their rates are practically theft.

Our goal is to make everyone delighted with our super service and feel safe in their home because of our expertise. We want all of our customers to love us and we want to be their electrician for life. I urge anyone to continue to look at some of the 110 reviews our customers have posted, 90 of which are "A"'s and the dozen Page of Happiness Nominations; with one Page of Happiness listing. Our prices are not intended to take advantage of anyone. They are calulated to allow us to handle the extra overhead it takes to provide superior service. I would rather spend a little extra to insure our service is spectacular than to cut corners and provide an inferior service. Most other companies, let alone electrcians do not understand this. So you may be able to find a "cheaper" price, but what is not there? Is it a license or insurance or background and drug testing for their technicians who are going to your home? Workers compensation insurance is very expensive: as much as 10% of any job. If another electrican is working at your home and they get hurt, are you protected from liablity? If the service company working at your home is not covered then you, as the homeowner, are liable. This year alone, 255 electricans have applied with us; I have hired 2. Where are those other 253 electricians working? I have been in business for 20 years. Customers call us regularly to inspect; and usually repair the work the "electrician" who was priced less than us. I find that the reason the other electrician was priced less was simpy due to the fact that they priced less actual work. Because most consumers are not aware of the 1000 page electric code book, it is easy for an electrician to take advantage of a homeowner by not doing enough work. In older homes, there may not be an easy way to do things, but we would rather educate the homeowner about their entire system than do inferior work and make an easy sale.

I signed up for the Angie's List Big Deal for a Whole House Electrical Safety Inspection, & I'm really glad I did! The house was built in 1977, & other than some work done in the early '90's everything electrical up to this point was the same as it was when the house was bought. Larry from Universal Wiring performed a very thorough inspection on 1/25/11 & found the electrical service, main disconnect, & sub-panel were all wired incorrectly posing a serious hazard, & he found an open splice in the attic. Also, there were no GFCI outlets in the bathrooms, kitchen, & garage. There were several other repairs/installations that I agreed to have done as well. Larry took pictures during his safety inspection, & these pictures helped us to better understand what he was referring to as he explained what he'd found. I accepted his estimate & work began on 1/27/11. I was happy to learn that the technician who performs the inspection also does the repairs because I felt very comfortable with Larry. I was impressed with his knowledge, his work ethic, & his positive attitude. He & his assistant Ryan arrived that day around 9 a.m. & immediately began working. It took another day & a half for all work to be completed. The second day when our electricity was off for approximately 8 hours, Larry & another assistant Mike worked straight through to after 5 p.m. & didn't even take a lunch break so we'd be sure to have electricity later that day. I have complete confidence in the work that was performed, & I highly recommend Universal Wiring.
Description of Work: They installed a new meter base, main disconnect, & sub-panel. They also installed new feeder cable to the sub-panel, several GCFI outlets in all wet locations, light fixtures in the closets, can lights in the master bathroom, & hardwired the garbage disposal. There were several other repairs/installations done as well.

Will was very polite, professional and friendly and spent time with me so I understood the problems and consequences. He had a great customer service focus. But because of the condition of the panel, he would not consider a repair. He did offer next-day service for a full panel replacement, but the cost was prohibitive to me. As was over $300 just for advice. I found another electrician who offered a quick, low-cost, short term repair for less than half the cost of Universal's service call. His bid was significantly lower than Universal's for the panel replacement. While I am certain Universal does great work, it comes with the prices set by larger companies. For those on a budget, I'd recommend considering other smaller companies who also offer great service and individual attention.
Description of Work: On short notice, a Universal rep came out to inspect a electrical panel breaker outage, which cut the power to 1/3 of my home. Rep Will did a thorough diagnosis of my panel and non-functional breaker at a cost of $307. I have an old, problematic panel and Will recommended full replacement of it plus full-home surge protection at a cost of $3,500+.

Our goal is to take care of the electrical system for all of our customers. Sometimes, in older homes, there is no easy fix. We would rather educate the homeowner about their entire system than get an easy sale be recomending a "simple" repair that could lead to a dangerous situation.

I called another company that couldn't come out the same day. I called Universal at about 11:30 AM and explained to them I needed an electrician to take a look at an issue identified on an inspection report that was part of a real estate transaction. They told me they could send someone the same day and they'd be there between 2-4PM. At about 1:45 I got a call from their technician, Eric, who said he was on his way. He arrived promptly at 2. He was friendly and courteous. He explained to me exactly what the issue was with the breaker box, how it could be fixed and exactly what it would cost to do so. I approved the repair and he fixed the issue, it was relatively minor. Eric seemed very knowledgable and was very friendly, I'd definitely use Universal Electric again.

After receiving the coupon code from Angie's List, I called to schedule the inspection and talked to a very nice individual named Nick. He was able to send an electrician the very next day and I was able to choose the time "window" that was most convenient. Eric, the electrician, called to let me know he was on the way and arrived promptly. Could not have asked for a nicer, more professional person than Eric. He did a complete inspection, gave us a report which he discussed with us, and fixed a loose outlet he found during the inspection. We had questions regarding security lighting which we hope to do in the future and he was very helpful in answering our questions, suggesting options and leaving us with a cost estimate.
Description of Work: We responded to a "Today's Big Deal." We received a whole house electrical safety inspection and a report of the results and recommendations. This was a $237 value so the "big deal" was indeed a good deal.

We are very pleased with them. The work they did was extensive. He rewired the outlets and put a new electrical box. He had to redo a lot of things. We would not want to mess with electrical stuff and I would definitely trust them to do that.

I found Unversal Electric on your web site. I contacted them and after one miss (my fault call), they showed up and gave me an estimate. I thought the estimate was high but I have never had this done before so I was not sure. They billed me 800+ for about 2 hours work and 2-3 new outlets. Since I was very afraid of having one of the electrical shorts causing a fire. I had them come out. They were rated very high BUT for 2 hours work this is really hight. On an hourly basis it is more than I make and I do make a good living.

We had Universal Wiring out to give us an estimate and were immediately impressed with the quality of their service. All costs were clearly stated upfront via a standardized leaflet so no guess work or approximations were involved in the estimate. Universal Wiring completed this large job promptly (3 days), cleanly and courteously. Richard was always on time, looked after our house while we were away (he did not let anyone in whom we had not warned him would come), and walked us through their progress each evening either in person or via a detailed note. At the end of the job, we had a complete and thorough walk-through during which he thoroughly explained our new electrical system and answered any remaining questions or concerns we had. We can't speak to the price: we immediately went with them based on both their BBB rating and their Angie's list rating so we did not shop around. That being said, we highly recommend them for their professionalism, skill and respect for the customer.
Description of Work: We just bought an older home and based on the inspection report, we suspected there may have been some problems with the electrical wiring of our house. We wanted to add new outlets and fix some grounding issues with the home. We had Universal Wiring out to give us an estimate and were immediately impressed with the quality of their service. After their inspection, we learned that our old house had some fairly serious electrical problems and we decided to more or less completely re-wire the home, put in a alternate and safer grounding system, put in a new electrical panel, had new outlets installed through out the house and bring all lighting up to code.

Universal Wiring was recommended to me by my plumbing and HVAC service provider, Hallmark. I had a strong, favorable first-impression when the scheduling-operator answered and explained how their services could help me. She advised me of their rates, how the service-technician would arrive and perform his work. She set an appointment for me at a convenient time on a Saturday. (Before I called Universal, I had contacted another electrician service which made me dial a succession of five different numbers until I found the operator who represented my area, but could not describe the business, nor set up an appointment, except to say that someone would call back later to do so.) Jeff the electrician arrived as scheduled, with a service van fully-appointed with all parts and tools likely for any circumstance. We reviewed my list of needs, then he explained the standardized pricing guide, and wrote an itemized estimate. He answered my questions, I accepted the estimate, and he went to work. He worked steadily, quietly, and neatly. He cleaned up all refuse from each repair site. Even when he had to cut into drywall there was no dust, and he applied a very professional temporary patch to the cut. The hole was minimal and will be easy to repair. Once he had examined them, he showed me that some repairs on the list were unnecessary, and struck them from the estimate. Another needed repair not on the list, which he discovered while working, was made instead. At the end, the final cost was several hundred dollars less than the estimate. I am 100% satisfied with the service and value I have received from Universal Wiring, which is why I rate them as "A" in all categories. If were possible to give an "A+" I would do so for Responsiveness.
Description of Work: I needed to make several electrical wiring repairs to my house stemming from wear & tear, damage, and contractor’s installation mistakes. These included miswired switches, loose appliance and circuit connections, and a severed run behind drywall.

Awesome! I found Universal Wiring through AngiesList last April, when I had a number of electrical outlets added. I was extremely pleased with Yovani, the service rep who came out then. He was very knowledgeable, professional, thorough and friendly and worked very efficiently and quickly. He also pointed out a problem with another company's work on an unrelated issue and suggested I contact that company to rectify the matter, which saved me much potential grief down the road. So I called Universal and asked if Yovani was still there and available to come out for the attic light work. Not only was he available but he was able to come out that day. Within a couple of hours of my call the job was finished. I was even more pleased with Yovani this time (and that's saying a lot). He has excellent attention to detail and is very mature for his years. I was also very pleased to get a follow-up call from the management, asking for my evaluation of their service. It's obvious that Universal values both its employees and its customers and I'll be using its service again soon.
Description of Work: My attic light works with only a pull-string and I've been wanting to have a lightswitch installed for it. Since the a-c guy is coming next week for his semi-annual inspection, I decided to have the electrical work done now.

Universal Wiring was outstanding in every respect! Professional, prompt & reliable, friendly & courteous. Undaunted by the job challenges, they repeatedly went above & beyond! Surprise glitches were handled with calm competence. Nasty aspects like crawling beneath our house many times were done w/o complaint. Very tidy and thorough, plus a stellar work ethic, care & respect for our home and possessions. Never complaints about the rock-hard wood, difficulty of surprise extra work, never compromised their very high standards of excellence - even tho all these certainly cost them in money, time, and scheduling. Re-wiring an existing house is an almost impossibly difficult job, incl. crawling into tiny spaces to fish wires in & out. They cleaned up after themselves daily, moved furniture & objects out of the way, carefully put down dropcloths to protect our stuff. My husband and I were VERY pleased with all aspects of their work. These folks hold themselves to an amazing standard. Their honesty & integrity were evident from the 1st day. Their knowledge & meticulousness are first-rate. We can't praise them enough! This company adheres to an amazing ethic - honesty, hard work, reliability, pride in one's work, & meeting challenges cheerfully are the norm. We will recommend them enthusiastically to everyone we know! This is a superb business!!
Description of Work: THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING COMPANY!!! Our 100-year-old historic house still retained its original 100-year-old knob-&-tube wiring! Many outlets, switches, & lights weren't functional, fixtures frequently burned out, etc. House had become dangerous and needed to be re-wired. There's no category for re-wiring an existing house, but there should be. It is an enormous job not for the faint of heart! A troublesome light fixture began the odyssey. A diagnostic check of the entire house was necessary, & all original, ancient wiring was found, except for kitchen & 2 bathrooms. Universal performed a thorough diagnostic check, then recommended replacing all 100-year-old wiring. (Several outlets/fixtures had actually burned to within an inch of house walls.) They located and disconnected all the century-old knob-&-tube wiring, replaced it with new wiring, ran new circuits, installed new breakers, replaced non-functional outlets, switches, & fixtures, and cleaned up carefully at the end of each day. Several unexpected surprises were found, including attic flooring that had to be pulled up to access the dangerous old wiring beneath. The necessary cutting of holes in walls of rock-hard cypress shiplap took much longer than usual and blunted their saws & drills repeatedly. Never complaints, always cheerfully & carefully did everything needed. This is an outstanding company! We mention their wonderful qualities and level of work below. TERRIFIC!!!

Universal Wiring has a 24-hour phone line that can provide emergency service if needed. I did not need it, I was happy to wait for the first available business day. I did not mind having my service person switched because Robert N. still came on time. He patiently listened to us for 30 minutes describing what services we needed, answering our questions, and making recommendations on the fixes that we wanted. He gave us an estimate of how much time the work would take and gained our approval of the cost from an invoice sheet with pre-printed prices and install/repair descriptions. I had purchased my own smoke detectors and outdoor lighting fixtures so I was paying for the labor installation. Robert N. finished the work in record time. He even paced his work to fit our time frame. He was extremely conscientious and cared about doing a good job. We appreciated the shoe booties and keeping it straight by ONLY wearing them inside the house. Most importantly, I appreciated the courtesy and respect he gave me as a customer. He was professional. I would definitely hire Universal Wiring again. I would agree with other AL customers that the repair/install fee was a good amount of money even with a $25 coupon discount. You still have to pay the $59 service fee even if you have repairs done (some companies waive this fee). But I would still pay for their service. Before calling them, I had waited 3 weeks for a property manager to schedule her handyman to fix these electrical issues and much more and they would have charged less. But where did this get me? Nowhere...waiting for 3 weeks. Universal wiring came when they said they would come. Told me the prices up front. I agreed to them. And they performed excellent work. We began to have a problem with losing power in our utility room, family room & garage but the breakers for those areas were not "breaking". We were told when we bought the house that the panel was one with a very bad track record of safety and that eventually it would need to be replaced. There is even a website dedicated to this product and its defects. Eric arrived for our scheduled appointment several hours early! It was an excellent beginning to one of the most positive service calls for anything we have had in a very long time. He was thorough in his inspection and assessment of the problem. He was also extremely pleasant, professional, knowledgeable and endlessly patient with all of my questions (even as I interrupted his work with "one more question"). The work was completed then and there, exactly as promised. We cannot say enough good things about the quality of the work provided by this company and their representative, Eric. We would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone and everyone and will not hesitate to call again, however, given the excellent work he did, it may be a while!
Description of Work: Replaced electric panel & garage security light.

Eric Sut with Universal Wiring is highly recommended. I called at 5:45 p.m. on Friday evening, and the problem was identified and fixed by 7:30 that evening. Eric took the time to explain what was causing the problem, and how he was going to fix it. Plus Eric patiently answered all my Electricity 101 questions about how electrical service works. I would recommend this company and Eric without reservation.

Prompt, friendly, aqnd informative. I have done business with these folks over the years, at first they seemed pricey, but quickly learned that you "quality service" doesn't come cheap. What other companies offer in savings on the front side usually results in short cuts that require re-work, more money on the back side. Universal Wiring gets the job done right the FIRST time and they stand behind their work. I highly recommend these folks!
Description of Work: Had to trace a why an outlet was not working.
