The plaster crew came on Friday/Saturday to install the new Plaster. I had selected one of the finishes that has to be sanded down so on Friday they installed the plaster and on Saturday they sanded it to the final finish. They failed to tell me that when they sand they sand the tiles as well the plaster. They sanded the blue off of quite a few of the water line tiles. I felt they should have warned me not to select a porcelain tile with a plaster finish that requires a sanding. The finished product (waterline tiles) looked worse than what I had. I was only replacing the tiles and plaster because that was highly recomended with a coping change. When I contacted them they tried to convince me that it was not a problem and that you could barely notice. I did not like their demeanor or way they handled it at all. They offered to replace the tiles but that would require a patch in plaster that will look worse than the tile damage. That was their original selling arguement to replace the tile and plaster at the same time to avoid that patch. In the end they took a small amount off the bill but I was extremely dissatsified and would have rather paid full price and had the job doen right. I feel like the Saturday crew did not want to work Saturday and was rushing thru the motions.
My recomendations - don't agree to have this done on a Saturday. None of the company supervisors were available to discuss until Monday once the pool was full of water. Do this during the week and don't start filling until you have inspected. Have a company project manager their on site.
"[Members Name], We do want to thank you for your compliments on our tile and coping crews. We are a company that takes great pride in our work and we are sorry that you feel this way about the rest of the work that was completed or about how we handled the situation. We agreed that there were some tile trim damage done when sanding the plaster and we felt we presented you the options to best handle moving forward. You requested that we not do the repair and we more than compensated you for what was charged to do the tile trim. $1000 off is more than a little bit, but we wanted to make you happy and this is what you requested after being presented your options twice. As you mentioned, we were very responsive to your concerns and addressed them in an orderly fashion. Again, we pride ourselves in our work and taking care of our customers. You are entitled to your opinion however we are sorry to see that you felt your job went this way. We hope you can enjoy your new and beautiful looking pool."
After the pool was filled, it lost 3" of water the first day. They sent out some workers to seal around the light fixtures. The leak slowed considerably, but we were still losing water. They said they would send out their leak detection people - that took a week. A few days later they arranged for repair of a supply line leak. There was an additional charge for this, which I understand, because of course it was not their fault. We were then 20 days into the project. We were told the paver repair people would be out that week. Twelve days later they show up. I believe we had only one contact with Pool Works during that time period.
Early on we asked to please be kept up to date on schedule changes. That is not hard to do with e-mail, yet it wasn't done. While we are pleased with the end result, the process was painful. It was obvious which jobs were done by employees and which were subcontracted. The subcontracted work was not timely.
"(Member names removed), Pool Works would like to thank you for selecting us to complete your work and I am sorry things did not run as smoothly. We really do pride ourselves in trying to be on time when we say we will be for a specific project and 90% of the time time we are. Sometime in working construction there are just a few things out of our control, plus the weather did not cooperate very much either in the delays. As mentioned, when using other subs we can be held up due to their schedules. Not that this is an excuse but we really do try and line up everything to run smooth and due to unforeseen circumstances there were delays. We apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused and as you mentioned the end result is hopefully what you were wanting. Thank you again and we hope you enjoy your new pool area."
The only problems we had were some clean up issues and the tile guy had to come back twice to fill in some grout that was missed or messed up from the power wash. The deco seal crew managed to drip ( more like a squiggly trail) their sticky chemical from my patio deck, out the gate and all over the driveway. They came back twice over the course of the next few weeks to get it off, but nothing worked, so it's still there. Doesn't show much on the deck, but it's pretty obvious on the driveway. But it is the driveway, so whatever. I also never knew when someone was coming out to clean up so we couldn't put our patio back together for awhile. More of an annoyance than a complaint.
Overall though, they definitely deserve an A. Our pool is gorgeous and they did a great job!
We had some misconceptions on pool finish and we would have gone a poor direction had we not let the project manager openly share his thinking.
Finally, when approaching a job like this, be ready for a mess because this is messy work. This company did a fantastic job managing the mess so as to minimize the impact on us as the project proceeded.
