cleared previously and they did not get back with me. Very disappointed
with the lack of followup and customer service
Only one person did the trimming work. One did not not climb in the tree but carried branches to their trailer. The third, spent most of his time in the truck in the air conditioning sleeping.
Even though they did remove one or two of the branches I asked them to, they didn't finish and said they had to go. However, they clearly expected tips since they did "in excess" of what they intended to do.
Their web site touts them as arborists. The ones I had contact with called themselves "tree killers".
I will never use them again.
We called Houston Tree Service due to earlier excellent services we received when needing our oak trees trimmed. Anthony Rico came out the next day (Friday) and surveyed the job. He said that they could have a crew out the next morning (Saturday) to cut the tree down, haul away the debris, and grind the stump. We accepted the bid as we needed the work done ASAP. He said that the crew would be available at mid-morning.
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, a crew of four arrived in a pickup full of equipment and towing an empty trailer. The crew leader was Cris Hutchison, the same person that had earlier trimmed our oak trees. All of the workers were native English speakers so we had no problems communicating. They surveyed the job, stabilized the tree with ropes to nearby trees, and had a worker climb to the top of the affected tree to trim the large branches. They roped and lowered any limbs that posed a risk to the pool and spa, then cut the tree trunk in sections and carted the wood to their trailer for disposal. After cutting the entire tree to the ground, they raked the yard of all leaves and then blew the pool area clean. At the finish, the only indication that a tree had been there was the base of the stump at ground level.
The entire job took one hour.
All four workers were extremely polite, well spoken and hard workers.
Houston Tree Service scheduled for the stump grinder to perform his work on Wednesday. I received a call from the stump grinder confirming his schedule to arrive at 10:30 (he was also a native English speaker). I received a call from him at 10 a.m. apologizing for the need to be late - he had a good reason. He arrived about one hour later and immediately began work using a brand new stump grinder. He completed the job in a matter of a few minutes, cleaning up the wood chips after completing the job.
And again, he was extremely polite and well spoken.
I highly recommend Houston Tree Services based on my two experiences with them.
Matt came by to give an estimate and showed up on time. Stated they have been in business for over 40 years and his father started the company. The crew that would come out would include a trained arborist and all his guys speak English. He gave me a professional looking business card and wrote out the estimate on a nice estimate worksheet. The work was to cut down 2 trees and grind the stumps and trim 4 trees. He gave me the best offer I received out of 3 companies I had give bids for the work.He said if I paid in cash he would do the job for $900, but if by check or card he would have to add additional cost.
After I left I noticed his estimate worksheet did not mention the stump grinding. I called him immediately and left a voice mail. He never picks up his phone only returns a phone call if you leave a message. I found out why later. He assured me the $900 dollar quote he gave me included the stump grinding. I made sure to ask again that everything would be cleaned up afterwords including the stump shavings and he told me they would.
When I called the company's main number to book the work they did not have the have the scope of work correct and I had to explain what what is was they would be doing (should have been my first tip off to a future bad experiance). I book the work for a Friday at 1pm.
They showed up Friday at 11am. Can't say they were late, but definietly not on time! They were lucky I was pulling into the driveway, when Matt called me to tell me they were there. However unlike Matt promised, only one person almost spoke English. He knew enough English to barely communicate with me. He did manage to tell me
that the stump grinder would come the next day. I immediately called Matt and left a message about this, and he called me back and told me that it is not the same crew and it would have to be tomorrow. I told him that I did not plan on this being done over two days and it had not been mentioned to me that it would be a two day job. He told me that its not like I even had to be there, but I would have to pay each crew separately in cash. $800 for the tree removers/trimmers and $100 for the stump grinder. I would give payment to each crew when they finished the job.
He must have juggled arrangements because I got a call from the stump grinder subcontractor they used for this job and he wanted to know when and where he should come. I basically had to make all the arrangements that Matt should have done, all he did was tell the stump grinder how to contact me and I had to organize when he should come based on when the tree removal would be done.
The workers trimmed the trees very fast, but I had to asked them to go back a few times and trim more than they did. It seems compared to my neighbor's trees that were just trimmed by someone else, my trees did not have half the work done on them even after I asked them to go back and trim more.
I was watching them out the window at one point when they were taking down one of the trees in the back yard when a branch fell on my roof hard with a loud and quot;Thumpand quot;. The guys working all looked at each other with a facial expression of, and quot;oh crapand quot;. They never said a word about this. I did not either because when the went to work in the front yard I checked out where the branch fell and could tell no major damage was done. Just a dent in the flashing. I didn't feel like the headache of speaking broken Spanish and English for a minor dent.
The stump grinder came in as the tree crew was leaving. They did a good job and I have no complaints about there work. I think the sign on there trailer was Jand R Stump Grinding. Jerry was the one who ran the machine. His machine was very old and backfired a lot, but it got the job done.
However, when they were leaving I asked about the tree grindings that were left covering my yard. He mentioned that they are not equipped to remove this and they only grind the stump, not pick up the shavings. I would have to call Matt to have him get a crew out here to pick it up. His stump grinder machine took up all the space on the tiny trailer and I could tell he was telling the truth; he was not equipped to pick up the shavings.
The same day, Friday, I left Matt a message. But now that all his crews had been paid he would not return my call.
I tried calling other times but each time it rolled to voicemail. He never once picked up his phone. I called the main office on Monday and the lady on the phone told me they would have Matt call me. He did not. I called the main office again Monday evening, the lady said he should be calling me that evening. He did not. I called again Tuesday at noon, she said he would contact Matt and we what was going on, but they usually do not pick up stump grindings. She called me back, said she talked to Matt and told me that it was not part of the deal or in the contract and they could come pick it up for an extra fee. I told her there was no contract only an estimate as Matt had me pay in cash. I told her in fact, the estimate did not even mention stump grinding but they did that work. The agreement we made was that it would be picked up. She said she was just a middle man. Well if Matt won't talk to me, all I have left is the middle man to talk to.
In addition to this, I found they backed over my yard with the fully loaded trailer holding the contents of 2 trees leaving a rut in my front yard.
I also find it interesting that their website states the company and quot;was started by Desmond Allred in the 60's and ran with Ashley Allred and Brandon Murphy today.and quot; If Matt Perkins' dad started the company like he told me, then they must have different last names.
I even noticed people who were walking by stopping to get their information and I've noticed them doing other lots on our road.
I will hire them again when our trees need done.
