I contacted Joshua through the Angie's List website. I wrote that I wanted to talk with him prior to him coming to my home. Instead, I received a call from him one Friday morning. He said he was in the area, so wanted to get started on the job. I try to be flexible, so told him to come on over.
My big question for him (or anybody doing such work) was "How does a consumer know how much $400 worth of tree service is?" I know how much an oil change costs; I've had that done many times. I know how much it costs to have my lawn cared for. I know how much a tank of gas costs. But I have no idea how much $400 of tree service is. It seemed like a fair question.
What Joshua said is that what I wanted would cost $100 more than what I had already paid through Angie's List. Of course. I should have known.
As I was already in for $200, I agreed to pay him another $100. He said he would take care of all the dead & broken branches and the branches of my neighbor's tree that were hanging over the fence and dropping debris into my back yard. I went back inside the house and could hear the chain saw running for a while. I think Joshua and his helper were finished in less than 2 hours. I thought $300 was a bit steep for two hours of work, but I'd done some research on the Internet before buying the deal and knew that for me to do the job safely myself, I'd have to purchase at least $200 of equipment that I might never need again. The better option seemed to be to have someone else do it.
Days later, when going to get my mail, I looked up into the trees and saw dead branches. Joshua was supposed to have removed all the dead branches. I emailed him, asking him to come back and finish the job. I didn't hear back from him. I then emailed him again, writing "I need to hear back from you soon, or I'll assume you don't intend to complete the job." I heard from him the next day. He said the earliest he could return was the following Monday morning. That was fine with me.
Joshua showed up just as he said he would. As I was working from home, I just pointed out some of the dead branches and left him to finish things. Later that day, I checked the trees and saw that they had removed most of the dead branches . . . certainly all the large ones. I can take care of the rest myself. I was surprised and disappointed by how much debris was left in the yard for me to clean up both times he was there.
That pretty much sums things up.
"We appreciate your business. These reviews are important to angies list customers. Its a shame when the customers who have used my service put inaccurate reviews. Everyone is able to have there own opinion. The thing that I guess we will need to get used to is, most customers have little idea what tree service cost. It is especially hard for us when we do over and beyond the value and still receive a "C" rating. To clarify, we trimmed 4 trees for you. One of the trees we nearly cut half the tree off for you of your neighbor's tree. My climber had to climb close to 40' into the tree. The dead limbs u are refering to us leaving if any, were smaller than a pencil. We really cant climb around 3 medium size pine trees with hand pruning shears and trim off every little dead mini branch. Both times we came to your house, I told you when we were finished and you said it looked good after looking at the work. We always go over and beyond, its just unfortunate when it isnt appreciated. Either way, we appreciate the work. I think the fact that we came back a second time to take care of things we never originally agreed to, speaks volumes about my integrity and company."
"I explained to you before we started that we would do our best not to damage your newly placed plants, but they will probably receive some damage. I even offered you a refund before we started the work. You knew we were scheduled to comeon the day we came but decided to plant new plants the weekend before. Right underneath 30' tall palms that needed heavy trimming. "D" rating is dishonest. Once again we go over and beyond and get a bad rating. Majority of my ratings are A+."
Great. Showed up on time, Was very polite. Explained scope of work. Cleaned up afterwards.
"We are very thankful for your review and recommendation to other customers searching for a great tree service company. These reviews are extremely important to our business and consumers. It is unfortunate that you felt the price was a little high and didn't mention this to me when we came to perform the work at your house. You told me we beat the lowest bid by $100. Your tree also required that we climb a two story roof to complete the job. We really enjoyed working for you and look forward working together in the future."
My trees and yard look great. The HOA may finally stop sending me letters about my tree over growth!
Josh clearly has a great work ethic, keeps his word and is reasonably priced. If I ever need tree service again his company is the one I will be calling.
