About us

Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists was founded in 1988 as one of the first private practice, referral-only veterinary hospitals in the country. Our three founding members envisioned a group of highly specialized, board-certified veterinarians who were able to use their combined experience and expertise to provide the highest quality, most comprehensive specialized care for companion animals, as well as working to advance veterinary medicine through education, innovation, and technology. Today, GCVS is an internationally respected veterinary specialty hospital with 14 specialties and 26 specialists, who have over 400 years of combined experience. GCVS is committed to continuing our legacy of excellence and leading innovation in veterinary medicine as our hospital continues to grow, with new departments added every year since 2011.

I cannot recommend a vet hospital I do not trust. After my experience on June 9th, I can never trust this vet hospital to properly triage a dog again. This hospital missed a life threatening internal bleed, which presented with almost textbook symptoms. Their lack of compassion and desire to learn from their mistakes showed us exactly the type of vet hospital this is.

They are about the best around. They are specialists in everything that they do. We don't go to them unless it is kind of bad.

i was at my wit's end when i brought my cat in to GCVS; you need to have a referral, so i was fortunate that my day to day vet referred me to them.

My concerns included my cat's having been on steroids for a year causing a huge weight gain, scratching at her ears and shaking her head, and losing hair on the top. My existing vet did not seem to be concerned about the weight gain.

The cause of both problems was determined on the first visit in March: an ear infection and mites, and a prescription regimen was set up that would hopefully cure both problems. At the end of the first month, the ear problem was much better and the mites were gone. At that point we switched ear meds: the cat wasn't happy about ear drops, but ultimately i think that the cure was worth the discomfort on both our parts (the medicator and the receiver of the meds)

Also tried a new cat food to assure that there were no food allergies contributing to the problem.

The veterinary staff was patient and understanding, and show a true love of animals, as well as understanding how relieving it is for the owner, after watching a beloved companion animal suffer, to think that perhaps there IS a way of solving this problem, returning the pet to good health. At the end of each visit, they provide a complete record of what was done during that visit and what needs to be done in the future.

I am extremely grateful for their work, and, if i knew another pet parent was at their wit's end with an animal problem, i would encourage them to get a referral and go to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists.

I cannot say enough about this place.  I have taken my dog there over the years for treatment of a heart problem.
The drs are very caring.  And the same dog just had oral surgery - the dental staff there is wonderful!
This place has it all!

Our 25-year old African Gray Parrott had what appeared to be a stroke on the Sunday before Labor Day Monday.  I called both of our vets and they both recommended Gulf Coast Vet Clinic.  We had used GCVC a long, long time ago for our beloved dog, and had a very good experience.  Although two weeks later we made the decision to put our beloved parrot to sleep, the service at GHCV was outstanding from the moment I brought our bird in to the moment we made the very difficult decision to put our parrot to sleep.  Dr. Pacheco and Dr. Chen were so caring and compassionate throughout the two weeks that our parrot was in and out of the clinic.  We feel they did everything possible to improve his health and send him home on a path to recovery.  All of the staff at the reception area were wonderful and attentive, as well as the staff person who kindly helped me take the bird cage down to our car and helped me get it in the car, which was not an easy feat. We were kept informed of every step along the way, and most times Dr. Chen called us herself with updates.  We never felt they were in a hurry on our visits nor our phone conversations and calls were always returned very promptly  When asked if we would allow GCVC to perform an autopsy on our parrot to help them with research to help other African Gray Parrots, we agreed.  Amazingly, within days, another 25-year old African Gray Parrot entered their clinic with similar signs, so we knew we had made the right decision.  We opted to have our parrot cremated, and he was returned to us in a beautiful little wooden box with his name inscribed on top, a little gold lock and two gold keys.  They also had his good claw imprinted in clay as a memento and made sure we received the little Converse blue "bootie" he had around his splinted foot.  We were so pleased with the service that when we went to settle our bill, we made an appointment to thank both Dr. Chen and Dr. Pacheco personally.  (Please note that we knew treating/caring for animals, all animals, and in particular exotics, is never inexpensive, but GCVC got an "A" from us on price, albeit expensive, because the service was outstanding.)

They're not that expensive. They are like the Walmart of veterinarians. They were confident and smarty pants over there that's why I go.

It went well. I took him back to have water therapy and it that helped. Dr. Whitney is very thorough and explained everything. He is a good surgeon. I asked that they take my dog often to go to the bathroom. When I came to take him home, they said they did take him out for a walk but he had a big accident in the waiting room.

Dr. A (can't spell her last name) was extremely professional and patient with us. I have 2 school age girls who the gerbil belonged to. She explained everything clearly to us, and let us know what our options were. They were very aware of the cost element, as a gerbil is not an expensive animal that lives very long, so they presented us with both lower cost treatments as well as higher cost ones, if that was our choice. They did everything to make our gerbil comfortable, and really helped explain everything to my daughters.

My cat Joey had a tumor in his neck and my regular vet said that it went way beyond his expertise and referred me to Gulf Coast. The oncologist at Gulf Coast convinced me to keep treating Joey with radiation even after Joey didn't want to eat anymore (he said that I should insert a feeding tube which I stupidly did). He convinced me to continue treatment and that there was hope for my poor boy. Joey suffered tremendously before he and I wound up in the Gulf Coast's emergency room, where even the emergency room doctor was shocked at how much treatment had been performed on Joey. Even though several years have now passed since I have been at Gulf Coast, I am still so angry that I listened to that oncologist and made my poor Joey suffer like he did! The money I spent is not the main point; the main point is that the oncologist must have known that Joey would not recover and--due to my own blindness and desire to keep my dear friend here on earth--I hurt my cat either because of the doctor's ego or because of his greed. I will never go back to Gulf Coast for any reason.

She specializes in parrots, rabbits and other small animals. She gives lectures on parrots and things. They are different than most animals. It is a big specialist hospital that we have here. They have cancer and radiation floors. Her specialty is birds. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. She is good with my parrot, she will talk to him and can sense when he is upset. She can sense what is wrong with him and knows how to take care of him. Her knowledge of parrots is spectacular. Gulf Coast is the crème of the crème of the Houston area and they are expensive. If a dog needs surgery, she can do it. She does all sorts of stuff. One thing about them, I never had a quick time to get in, I always end up waiting in the lobby for quite a while, because they are always so busy, but you always wait for that kind of quality. I have waited over an hour to get in, even though I had an appointment. They do have a cafeteria that you can go too. The vet and the hospital is excellent. It is just the waiting time and the price.

We had taken our dog to the regular vet the day before and were sent home with nothing but some nausea medicine and special food. But the next day the dog was still not eating and obviously getting worse, so our vet referred us to Gulf Coast that day. My wife took the dog in at 4:30 pm and by 5:30 pm the dog was having xrays and an ultrasound. They initially recommended that we keep him overnight and administer fluids, but after the xray they discovered a blockage that needed to be removed. The cost for surgery and recovery time was really high, but worth it for the dog. I do think they try and overcharge by keeping animals there for extended times and running more tests then needed, but if the animal is helped, then it's all worth it. Just be sure to ask for the costs and estimates before they do anything.

My dog tore her left rear ACL, and this required major surgery to eliminate her pain and get her walking again. The staff at Gulf Coast made an extremely stressful and fearful experience, tolerable. They instilled a sense of confidence and relief in me, and the surgery was completely successful. My dog is back at 100%, running and jumping like she did when she was a puppy.

This visit was SOP: you bring in the animal housed in a travel cage, and wait for the vet to meet you and your pet in a consultation room. The vet, in this case Dr. Chen, a competent, knowledgeable avian vet, examined Ziggy and discussed his previous problems and his present conditions. They took Ziggy into the area where they perform surgical and other procedures, and I went to the waiting room. Animals seem to be more easily controlled in such cases without the owners being present, so they do not allow the owners in the area where they perform surgeries and other procedures. Then you wait, and when they are finished, they bring the animal to you. At that point, you may have another consultation, depending on what the procedure uncovered. I've been there a number of times over the last few years, and they always discuss all the possibile diagnoses, as well as possible procedures and treatments, and complications, and you can choose which alternatives to use (or not use.) They always give you a computer printout of the cost of any asked-for or anticipated medical procedures before they do anything. They are very open-minded and they do listen, and give you the pros and cons of possible procedures. They are expensive, but I do not begrudge them the money: they have board-certified avian vets, and they do have 24-hour emergency service. I want my birds to be treated by the best. Number two may be fine for others, but my birds have to have the best.

They have the best care for our dog. It's a specialty hospital and really they are specialized in cancer as well as orthopedics. Their prices are expensive but I didn't expect any less service they were giving. I don't have measures but I think their price is comparable probably in all of Texas. I don't think we could move down from a Mercedes to a Honda because it's cheaper. I don't have anyone else who is certain and they are the only people I go to.

My son had a dog that had a brain tumor, which they were treating. They did a good job, but it just was not possible to save him. The last time we were there we had to put the dog to sleep. It's a very nice facility. They have very nice veterinarians. They are expensive but I don't know if that makes it bad. I will use them again.
