The request that I was to be called when they arrived to execute the job. They never called me and they ended up damaging my sprinkler system piping. In addition the fence we selected from their catalog was not the one they installed and it was a different width.
After mentioning the problems to the supervisor they said there wasn't much they could do. Well afterwards I had to get the sprinkler system repaired and had "purchased" their liability insurance for any damage. They refused to pay the bill. After many calls and letters to Mr Umsted he finally agreed to cover most but not all of the cost to repair the sprinkler system. Very frustrating as there would have been no problems had they contacted me when they arrived to do the work. As I knew exactly where the sprinkler lines were it all could have been avoided. Here is an excerpt from my letter dated 5/17/2006;
Based upon your indication you may wish to reinforce with your salesman that they should attend the start of any of their jobs. This would reduce or eliminate any issues arising from special considerations on the job site. Please also remember that the gate still has not met my satisfaction as it continues to sag down. This gate has been adjusted several times in the past few months.
Fast forward and the fence is leaning again, actually the gate was pulling the support down. They came out and reset this for me and within two more years it was leaning again. Apparently they only set the main support post 3 feet into the ground. They told me that it would have cost me more to have more of the beam placed into the concrete. I ended up paying them another $550 to reset the main support more than 4 feet into the ground. This time it was sufficient to support the heavy gate. They had blamed the soil, blamed the drought, blamed the rain and it was ineptness that they used in the installation. If they had installed the main support at 4 feet or more into the ground it never would have leaned over so many times.
Mr Umsted also owns Western Fence company and apparently is one of the largest fence companies in the state. No matter, they did a lousy job, lousy installation and lousy customer service. Never use them for a fence!
