31 days after we sold our house, I start getting calls from a collection agency. Our account had been turned over to collections!! We received a cancellation notice in the mail with no mention of anything like this. I received a billing statement stating "No action needed". What????? I was shocked. Who does this?
I called ADT and as of this moment, I have spoken to 3 different people. All apologized for not being notified and for being told I had 90 days, but refusing to take it out of collections. I paid the contract off immediately and would have done so the day I called had I been told this was what they were going to do.
My advice if you are reading this - be aware when signing a contract with these people.
Read my other reviews to see that I only give honest, detailed reviews (good as well as bad). I can unequivocally say that ADT is the worst service company I have ever used for ANYTHING. I'll go issue by issue to keep this short:
1. When I changed the 3 year contract over from my roommate's name into my name (after paying on time for 2 years), they made me renew for another 3 years, or pay several hundred dollars in termination fees. The changeover involved no equipment changes, or any other services other than taking off one name and putting in another. The rep told me that after paying for 3 years, I would own the equipment outright, and could terminate without a fee then. I explained that I had already paid 2 of the 3 years on time, but the rep would not budge - he said I would have to start over from the beginning and use the same equipment for another 3 years before I would own it and be free to leave the contract. I feel that this is completely unfair to rope me in for a total of 5 years with no remedy on my part.
2. The initial installer (apparently an ADT "authorized dealer" - not an actual employee - even though I called ADT for the service) promised that any future maintenance or visits would be free of charge. When the system broke down - on it's own - not my fault (the signal receiver quit working for some unknown reason) - they charged me about $30 for a visit fee, and said that the installer lied to me. No remedy offered, no apologies, just a pay the bill or else attitude. The service guy that came out agreed that I did nothing wrong to break the receive - it just went out on its own.
3. During discussions about Number 2 (above), I noticed that the copy of the contract in my possession was missing pages 3 and 4 of the fine print. This came up because during Number 2, they stated that the service visit fee was in the contract, but I couldn't find that anywhere. I called ADT and requested a copy of the contract with the missing pages. Two weeks later, I received a paper copy in the mail MISSING PAGES 3 and 4. I called again and requested a copy again, specifically asking for pages 3 and 4. Two weeks later, i got another paper copy in the mail MISSING PAGES 3 and 4. Today I called again, and was told by four different people that they don't have pages 3 and 4, that I would have to call the original installer for that, who is not an ADT company. And they didn't have their phone number or contact info - they said that's in the contract - which it isn't - probably on the missing pages. So to recap, in Number 2, they charged me a fee stating that it's in the contract, and in the end, it is not in my contract - their copy or mine.
4. I received a letter in the mail from ADT one week ago that my monthly bill will be increased approximately $2, with no explanation of why. I felt that this was a breach of the contract - they retain the right to raise my price in this contract where I am locked in for 3 years, but I can't cancel without hundreds of dollars in fees. I called and complained, and the representative agreed to "waive" the increase since I "protested" it on the phone.
5. During discussion of Number 4 (above), I asked what my new monthly price would be. The representative listed a bunch of fees, "plus taxes." I asked specifically for the final amount of money that will be taken out of my checking account each month. He stated $51.95, and that was after waiving the "increase" in number 4. I checked my bank statements, and every month going back at least a year, I had been paying $38.96. After going around and around, he claimed that I added a "cell guard" to my service within the past month. I swear to Jesus that I had absolutely no contact with ADT whatsoever for several months, and had made no changes to my service, equipment, account or anything else. After being transferred on the phone 4 more times, I got a rep who said that I had not been paying for the extra service all along, that they just noticed it, increased my bill by $13 without telling me, and that they reserve the right to back bill me for previous months, per the contract (see Number 2 above). When I explained that it's not in my contract, they said it was, and transferred me again.
6. Every time I've called with an issue over the past 3 years, the service personnel are curt, unaccomodating, and have an attitude that they are doing me a favor. I have never felt like a valued customer, and other than Number 4 (which was their fault to begin with), they have never remedied a single issue I brought to them.
Right now I am contacting my attorney to cancel my contract by claiming that they have breached their side on numerous occasions. I hate to pay the legal fees, but the rep today told me I would be charged $552.63 if I cancel today in cancellation fees.
STEER CLEAR OF ADT!!!
Apparently greed is keeping everyone unsafe. Shame on ADT.
They are a big company. They do business and residential projects. I have never had to go to their office. I don't even know where they are located. I just call the 1-800-number and they come out. They are available usually when I need them. Their responsiveness is quick. I don't have to wait a long time for them to come out and take care of whatever I need. They are a bit pricey, but I haven't had any problems with them. I've been using them continuously for years now.
