My first mistake was calling the number posted on a sign just outside of my subdivision, instead of sticking to Angie's List...but I was in a hurry and thought it was a relatively simple task and it would not hurt to get a quote. 1.The contractor said he was going to power wash the deck, a separate price for this service was never discussed. He did not do this; instead he stated that he did not get a good look at the deck the previous night (because it was dark) and that the deck did not need pressure washing since it was new. Instead he claimed that he swept it first but obviously did a very poor job, leaving a large amount of cedar shavings and even a 16d nail lying on the deck. 2.He said that he was going to mask-off the entire deck with materials that he was to provide. He did not do this and we had a considerable amount of over-spray on the house, railing, columns, and spa. 3. He said he was going to apply three coats of stain. My concept of three coats is that you apply a coat, let it dry, apply the second coat, let it dry, and then apply the third coat. I assume his idea of three coats was to simply pass the nozzle back and forth three times. It would not be possible to allow anything to dry even once in the 4 hours it took him to complete the job. 4.He said he was going to stain the under sides of the bar, railing, and benches. None of this had been done when he first tried to get to me accept the job, and was never completed to an acceptable level. 5.He said you were going to stain the tops of the arbors. None of this had been done when he first tried to get to me accept the job, and was never completed to an acceptable level. The worst part was his repeated attempts to convince me that the wood was protected even though I could not see any stain on it. The contractor is a slipshod kid with a power sprayer. His work was sloppy and he argued about everything that I tried to get him to address. I eventually decided to just finish the work myself. The cost was reasonable and he did get the majority of the wood covered. I think he would be good for fence work in the middle of a field. But not on a project near something that you wouldn t want paint/stain slopped all over.
Description of Work: Preparation and staining of new cedar deck, roughly 450 square feet.
