A friend recommended this plumber and he was on Angie's list, so I called in the morning to ask about price and availability to do the repair. They could come within 2 hours - great. She couldn't/wouldn't give me a price, said that he would give me a price when he saw it. I asked about the hourly rate, she said they don't charge by the hour, but by the job. Maybe this should have been a red flag.
He came, the wall was mostly open, the leak was visible and was clearly pointed out - no searching whatsoever! He made another cut with the tool we had there already and cut 5"x20" piece of drywall. It was a simple repair in a tight spot. He spent 20-30 minutes, which he in turn was charging me time, about how he was going to do it, bc it was in such a tight spot. He starts "working" by turning off the water and that is when I asked about cost. He said $350-$495 that is with 2-3 hours of labor. At that point, I knew he was taking advantage of me. I should have sent him packing - my mistake. But the water was off, a leak in the wall, I would just hover and get him out fast. There is nothing fast about this guy. He continued to complain about what a tight space and how difficult of a job was because of the tight space. He finally starts cutting the pipe and still not sure how he can do the repair. I TELL HIM HOW IT CAN BE FIXED!!!!! I tell/ask him to take the piece out, re-solder the leaking connection, then put a coupling to re-attach the 2 pieces. "Oh I guess that would work." I had done simple plumbing on a remodel of a previous house, I knew what needed to be done, I just didn't want to set the house on fire. I told him that I had some experience with plumbing, we knew what the problem was, just so he knew I wasn't naive about the fix.
He finally finished, maybe 1 and 15 minutes after he arrived. I asked him to be kind with the price. He kept talking about how expensive the big plumber were and how good he was and how "fair" he was. He was good, he fixed the leak, but for a Master Plumber who has been working for 30-40 years, it took alot of time to "figure" out how to do the fix, which was ultimately solved by me. In the end, I paid for 1.5 hours of labor ( when there was maybe .5 hour worth of labor, the other 1 hour was for figuring out how to fix it, a bathroom break, walking back and forth to his truck 5-8 times to get every item he needed one at a time) . He was milking a quick fix,and would have milked it more if I didn't have a clue about plumbing. And there my friend, is why I am writing this review. He was not honest, he tried to take advantage, but knew he wasn't going to be able to get away with what he originally intended. We thought the fix would be $150 -200. So he got an extra $100 and a horrible review on Angie's List. I will NEVER rehire again. We were hoping d to find a good, reliable plumber that was fair, to call when needed.
