Service person arrived on time. Said the job of removing my old unit and installing the replacement (which I already have here) would take approx 4 hours for 2 service persons, and he quoted first $2500, then $2000 after we expressed shock at the first price.
4 hours of work between 2 people and $2000 would mean they are making $250 per hour. Research shows the industry standard to be between $12 and $20 per hour here in TX, and $25 in AK and HI.
I cannot recommend a company that blatantly attempts to rip off the consumer.
Due to an addition to the house, we were advised that it may be in our best interest to upgrade the capacity of the system. We agreed, and the air take inlet was expanded to accommodate the increased air flow. The outdoor unit was placed on a pre-form concrete pad (where before, it was not), and was considered standard installation.
Our old unit, at some point, was failing to drain condensation properly, and had compromised the integrity of the raised closet floor. For a reasonable extra fee (included in the number above), the section of raised flooring under the blower was fortified before the new unit was installed. To do this, they also removed (then replaced) the hot water heater in the same closet.
My only (semi) complaint would be that at the time of install, they did not have the matching heating unit to install into the blower. I was told that they would come by the next week and install it. That was fine with me (In July, in Texas, who cares about the heating coil???) but it was a month later when I called to inquire. They seemed on top of it, and that it had been a recent topic of discussion. A few days later, a technician came out to install it. It may be a few more months before we test it, but I have some faith, or I wouldn't be typing this, would I?
The installation came with a new thermostat, but I had already installed one that was a little better than the one offered. Although they didn't knock anything off the price to *not* install a new one, I felt that we were at a good and quot;fairand quot; place. AND, they totally honored my Angie's List coupon!
