Jay came highly recommended, and we selected him after getting three other bids.  We spoke to several of his customers, all of whom said they would use him again.

We decided to have him replace the patio siding and repaint so we could see how he worked.  The work was satisfactory, so we engaged him to redo the hall bathroom.  We were pleased with the outcome of that bathroom so decided to have him do the major master bathroom remodel ($25,000).

That's when the trouble began.  Jay was never on time.  Despite the fact that I lectured him about it several times, he was consistently late on the job site.  He didn't plan well.  He would have the painters come in before the plumbers were done, so the painters would have to come back and redo their work, which made them angry.  The first plumber he hired was so messy and disorganized that we asked him to find another plumber.

When he had problems getting the tub to fit in the enclosure that he had built, he left to get a sawzall.  When I asked him what he was going to do with it, he said he was going to cut off some of the base of the new $5000 bathtub to make room!  I told him that wasn't going to happen, so he ended up tearing down the enclosure to get the tub in place.

After they poured the concrete, the pipes started leaking.  I knew he had told the plumber to replace them, so I asked him what happened.  He told me that the plumber hadn't replaced the pipes, but the concrete guy was there.  So he told him to go ahead and pour the concrete thinking the pipes would be ok.  They obviously weren't, so they had to jackhammer the concrete, replace the pipes and then redo the concrete.

By the time they were approaching the finish line I had had enough, so I fired him and withheld the final payment of $3000.  I used that to get other contractors to complete the work and correct some problems that he had created.  Every time we go into our bathroom, we are confronted by the things we know weren't done right and wish we could afford to do them over.  We love the design and the color scheme, but the tiles and grout are disappointing.

Overall it was a very bad experience.  I think Jay was in over his head and inexperienced in a job the size of our bathroom.
