.Our overall experience with this company has not been good. We recently built a new house on the 18th green of a golf course. We received 3 bids for the landscaping and irrigation of our property. Although the bid from Southern Designs Landscaping and Irrigation was the highest bid, we chose them because they told us they would gaurantee their work and that the sod would be "certified" Bermuda 419 Tif. When we received the bids from the two other landscapers, they both recommended french drains in front and on the east side of our house because of the water that collects there when it rains. The "expert" from Southern Designs assured us that they would be able to grade our yard in such a way that the water would run off and we would not need to install a french drain.
WEEDS IN SOD: We have an excessive amount of weeds in the sod we received (even though we paid for 419 Tif). The landscaping company sprayed for weeds once, but it rained about 5 hours after they sprayed. Our sod has gone dormant for the Winter, so I guess we'll see what issues we have when Spring comes.
SPRINKLERS IN FLOWER BEDS: Everything went fine with the installation, however, we had a problem with the sprinklers in our flower beds. We did not plant our flower beds until 2 1/2 months later because of the heat so we did not run the spinklers in the beds. When we went to turn on the sprinklers in the flower beds, the zones for half of the beds were not working. When we called the company representative, he told my husband there was probably dirt in the sprinkler heads and that my husband should blow out the heads. We paid $24.5K for the irrigation and sod...why were we being told to perform maintenance on a system that was less than 3 months old???
They finally sent someone out to find out why the zones in the flower beds were not working. Come to find out, the zone was not hooked up at the control box. In addition, we were orginally told we had 3 zones in the flower beds, but in reality, only 2 zones were installed (we have flower beds around our entire 3000 sf house). In addition, when the zones were installed no consideration was given to the fact that our North facing flower beds do not need as much water as our South and West facing flower beds because our North flower beds stay shaded and our South/West flower beds get full sun. Also we have several lawn sprinklers that shoot into the flower beds causing spots in the beds to be over watered (not to mention they hit our windows and leave hard water marks too). "We" have to fix this issue ourselves because they will not return to adjust the sprinklers.
DRAINAGE PROBLEMS: In addition, we did need the french drains. Although the representative from Southern Designs Landscpaing assured us that they would be able to grade our front and east side to prevent standing water during rain; the front and East side of our house get flooded every time it rains. When we hired them as "landscapers" , we expected our yard to be properly "landscaped". We did not expect to have to hire someone else to dig up our yard 4-5 months later to fix an issue that they told us they would take care of during the initial installation of our irrigation/sod.
We feel that Southern Designs Landscpaing and Irrigation have pretty much taken our money and ran, despite the fact they they gave us "1 year warranty on parts and labor".
