This company was a 100% disaster from start to finish. They literally botched the home reconstruction project. They made numerous mistakes, had no oversight, hired deceptive and dishonest contractors, pointed fingers and placed blame, demonstrated poor workmanship and bad judgment. They were a horrible nightmare. They did everything wrong, and nothing right. This is a very inexperienced and incompetent company. I would not wish my experience with McClellan Construction on my worst enemies. Hire if you will, but you have been warned.

Let me start by saying I don't write surveys like this unless someone was outstanding, bad. Initially went well. They started when they said they would and work was progressing. However, when the hardwood floors were removed the door threshold was removed. Initially we informed the flooring people who told us the contractor had to do that for liability reasons so we told the contractor as well. R.E. McClellen said they would have that put in. The hardwood floors were installed and the day after they began sanding and staining, we had a driving rain storm. We went by the house to check on it due to reported hail and looked in the front door to see 40+. Sqft of warped wood flooring. When we investigated we found that the threshold had never been sealed down, just layed down, so the water ran right under it into the new wood floor. We informed the contractor and they sent out Serv-Pro Keller (great people). Although the suction mats were removing the water from the wood, they could not remove water that might have rolled under the concrete layer of plastic. We had to insist they make sure there was no water under the plastic. They kept telling us the mats would remove the water. Sure enough after we insisted, they cut into the wood to find water under the plastic. Ultimately over 40 sqft of floor had to be removed and replaced. R.E. McClellen tried to get our insurance to pay for their mistake. Additionally, we now had a door issue. R.E. McClellen sent out a carpenter to replace the door jam (for more than the cost of a new door installed by Home Depot, but at this point they were the quicker option). The carpenter worked on the door ALL DAY, and could only just barely get it to shut. He had to come out another day to adjust it. At this point R.E. McClellen wanted to relay wood without testing their door fix (which I knew would not keep the water out. We tested it and water continued to pour in under the door. Their carpenter had not bothered to seal the thresholds! Another guy from the contractor came out and took one look under the door and realized the problem. At this point we called Home Depot for a new door and install. After Home Depot was done, the door was sealed and the final flooring install was completed.

Price: They overcharged my insurance for cement leveling they never did.

Quality: Their Sheetrock work was well done, but the door repair was an total failure. I would have given them a "B" for everything except the door which would have been an "F". So round it out to a "C-".

Responsiveness: Most of the issues revolved around communication. The lead agent for R.E. McClellen was rarely there, giving me the sense that I was the general contractor.
Punctuality: They arrived when they said they would, but we're not perfect so just missed an "A" there.
Professionalism: Here is where they failed. If they had just admitted the mistake and corrected in the first place this review may have gone entirely the other direction. But when I have to insist on them to correct the mistake and then stop them from making the same exact mistake, I feel like they were not interested in doing the job right.

Once the contract was signed we were continuously put off as far as getting the repairs started. It was the and quot;excuse of the weekand quot; program. The water mitigation company had removed the lower cabinets completely and left the uppers. This seemed to throw McClellen into a state of confusion and they continuously brought up the fact that the doors and hardware should have been saved, I'm still not sure what I was supposed to do about that. At one point they came and removed one of the upper doors in order to match new lowers, that door was never returned.
This started in Feb at the latest, claim was called in on Jan 7th. At one point in April we told them that the job had to be done by June 15th, as we were leaving for vacation. Of course we were told that that would not be a problem, but the delays continued...
In early May, I believe, their painter called and said he would be out tomorrow if that was ok. I told him that we were thinking of switching contractors so we needed to have a conversation. After this a lot of commotion ensued and some drywall repairs and tape and bedding were done, about a half-day worth of work. Then it got quiet again...
By June 1st, this is the total amount of work accomplished and it was obvious that it could not be done in 2 weeks. They had not even done a design for the new cabinets! When we called USAA and told them that we were done with McClellen, another round of commotion ensued in which they blamed my wife, claiming that she had not given them dimensions for the new appliances and sink. They called and said they were ready to design the cabinets and get the job done! Incredible!
Bottom line is that after almost 5 months they had not even really started the job! They are an approved contractor for USAA, so I have to assume that they are capable of doing decent work, but I have no evidence of it. The only excuse that I can even conjure up for them is that they are in Ft Worth and we are in Flower Mound, a considerable distance, and they just didn't want to take the effort to make the necessary trips out to do this job. Then why bid it? This was a $20,000 job and we were able to quickly find local contractors who were more than willing to pick it up.

They were really good. I liked that they were on time. They always called before they came to make sure we were on the same schedule of what was to be done. A manager always followed up. They were extremely professional. I thought the price was very fair.

RE McClellan was the general contractor recommended by my insurance company. Overall, I was extremely satisfied with the work performed. The company was very professional and Bob McClellan was very responsive to my concerns. The employees and subcontractors who performed the work were very professional and did quality work. The total cost includes both the insurance portion and my out-of-pocket costs.

It seemed like they did not listen to what we wanted. They took a long time to do the job, over 9 months. I realized it would take a long time, but it was 3 months longer than the estimated time. A lot of the work they did was very poor quality. We had them redo some projects. I ended up finishing the repairs. They were recommended by the insurance company.
Response from R E McClellen Construction Inc
"1. The homeowner had major foundation repairs done by another company that extended the completion date at least 3 months. 2. We performed exactly what the homeowner asked us to do. 3. Not one complaint was registered with our office regarding any problems by Member. 4. Compared to the quality of the existing work prior to our work - there was no comparison. 5. I disregard any all of the issues or non-issues this homeowner states in the member comments listed above."

RE Mcclellan saved us thousands of dollars on our project because he was able to get us some good deals. I have met other people who have dealt with him and they all love him. He ended saving us over $4000 on the project!

They were very good. They had to measure and measure to get things right. It wasn't an easy job. The finished product turned out good for me. They had to order all of the glass professionally cut. They were expensive, but they had an expensive job to do. It was a custom job.

It was good. The only complaint was that it took longer than expected. They were very professisonal and answered all of our questions. Their motto is the customer is first so they have not asked us to pay until all of the work is completed to our satisfation. They did work with us on 2 insurance claims. They coordinated with the insurance adjuster and the claims department.

When we returned from a trip to find this problem, I immediately contacted McClellen and they responded immediately and got a temporary door on to replace the boarded up entrance. McClellen's people are an example of outstanding craftsmen who take pride in their work. They are punctual, do their work in an efficient manner, clean up after each job and each day. They are also very communicative, keeping me informed of progress, etc so that I did not have to second guess when things would happen. Pleasure to do business with
