caused by a leak into a downstairs living area due to a less than two years old defective renovation by another contractor of our upstairs bathroom. Mike McBride was personable when we met with him and he assured us that this job would be done RIGHT. He said this several times, promising that we would never have to go through this type of repair again, because this job would be done RIGHT. The demo was done relatively quickly and the resulting repair looks really good. However, we did experience some issues. The first issue was with Mr. McBride?s subcontractor?s
carpentry work. Proper measurements were not done accurately and a supporting pony wall was constructed and tiled 1 inch too short, which resulted in an installation fiasco with the glass shower enclosure, a fiasco that resulted in some irritated exchanges. Here comes the second issue. Once the problem with the enclosure was solved, the enclosure was caulked with what we were told was a ?top of the line? caulk/sealant/glue. We were told to wait 24 hours before using the shower. We waited for about 30 hours.
Mike McBride told us that when everything was done, a professional cleaning team would be in
to clean up the demo and repair areas. That did not happen, so after waiting for approximately 30 hours after caulking, we proceeded to clean the bathroom. Imagine our HUGE disappointment when the shower enclosure leaked like a sieve?all along the supposedly sealed and caulked edges. My husband called Mike immediately and Mike assured us he and Tom would be here the next morning to deal with the problem. After a no show, and no communication as to why there was a no show, Tom and Mike finally appeared to deal with the problem. Using the same ?top of the line? caulk/sealant/glue, they re-caulked the entire shower. This time they told us to wait 7-14 DAYS to use the shower to allow this caulk to properly cure and harden. We waited 13.5 days to
use the shower, only to discover that it still leaked. We called and were told that Tom would be out to caulk the shower YET AGAIN ? which he showed up ready to do?, with the SAME ?top of the line? caulk/sealant/glue. We refused to allow this product to be used for a THIRD TIME. (The true definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing time after time, expecting different results.) After discovering that the only other product he had with him was NOT to be used to seal and waterproof shower doors, Tom went off in search of a suitable product. After a couple of hours, Tom returned with a caulk that was recommended for the job at hand. He told us he had re-caulked the entire inside of the shower enclosure with this new product which claimed to dry in 3 hours. We gave it overnight. Guess what? The shower door still leaked.
Now here is where we start to get ticked and I think with good cause. This demo/repair cost us just pennies under $12.000.00. We have already paid McBride Plumbing IN FULL for this work. At this point, we felt like we were being shunted aside in favor of ongoing projects McBride was working on. We were several times given a specific time for McBride Plumbing to be here and no one showed up and no one called to tell us why no one was here. When these no shows occurred, calls to Mike McBride?s cell phone, and to the office phone went unanswered. Messages were left to call ASAP, with no response. "Patty," the office manager (?) seemed to be very forgetful and it would
ultimately be said that she ?forgot? to call us about a delay in the arrival time or about the necessity of a reschedule. Actually, through this whole project, Mike has had a problem with time management and with arriving at an agreed upon time. His subcontractors were much more
reliable in this respect that he has been.
April 1, 2013 Mike McBride was to have been here at 10 AM; this appointment time was scheduled
the week before. Around 10:45 AM, my husband called McBride?s offices to find out where Mike was. Patty answered and said she would have to call Mike find out where he was and get back to us. The answer given when Patty called back is somewhat confusing. After my husband called
her around 10:45 AM, Patty said she called Mike. We were told that Mike told Patty that he had to
take his wife to the doctor and said he would be here around 1 PM. Patty subsequently said she was supposed to call us earlier but she forgot. However, if Patty had been told to call us and
she forgot, that would indicate that she already knew that Mike was not going to make the 10 AM appointment and should have NOT needed to call him to find out where he was.
Now, if I were Mike McBride and I had a project that I had bragged would be done RIGHT, and
I had already been PAID IN FULL for this job, and the work was shown to be substandard ? a FOURTH leak in the brand new shower after a supposedly thorough and proper caulking qualifies as substandard ? I think I would have made VERY SURE this customer was handled with the
utmost urgency ? no excuses, no stories. However, around noon Monday, April 1, my husband
received a voice mail tell us that now TOM would be here at 3 PM ? we?d now gone from a 10 AM appointment missed, to a 1PM appointment rescheduled for 3 PM. We were once more held hostage to the house enduring one missed appointment after another, unable to make
plans to do anything away from the house because one of us had to be here for whenever someone might show up.
I spoke to Patty at 12:10 PM on April 1, 2013. I found it odd that Mike would not know about an appointment scheduled for him at 10 AM on Monday that was scheduled last week! And after telling her how I felt that this kind of sloppy communication reflect poorly on the company?s
reputation, she told me that McBride wasn?t in the business of putting people off. That might have been easier to believe if this had been the first time appointments had been missed, pushed back or rescheduled at the last minute.
When I tried to confirm what time TOM would be here, we went from 3 PM to BETWEEN 3 and 4
PM. I told her about feeling like we were once again being held hostage in our home as we had been told Mike would be here at 10 AM; then 1 PM; then Tom would be here at 3 PM; and then Tom would be here between 3 and 4 PM. I tried to make Patty aware of the level of frustration involved
in this pattern of hit-or-miss communication, and I?m sure I was somewhat disagreeable, but we have paid McBride Plumbing $12,000.00 for a project that has given us a shower that
continued to leak and we continued to be pushed aside for whatever reason. Patty then said she
would make sure that Tom was here at 3 PM. As I was telling her that if he wasn?t, I?d be calling back, she hung up on me. WOW! How?s that for building customer goodwill?
Mike and Tom admitted that the installation of glass shower enclosures was not in their field of
expertise. When the shower enclosure leaked for a FIFTH time, McBride called another company that specialized in glass shower enclosure installations. We were stalled by McBride for a week before this separate company was called and a time was set for them to come out.
They came out, surveyed the problem, set a time to come back and completed a successful repair in one visit.
Overall, the bathroom looks great and now that the shower does not leak, I am happy with the work done. Our frustration was with the unnecessary delays, non communication, and lack of attention to detail with regard to carpentry and shower enclosure installation. BRAD and PAUL (tile subcontract
