I received three quotes for the tree service described above. My tree and the four big branches just about covered about 2/3 of the pool and was a mess when acorns fell in the fall. I also wanted more light to allow the grass to grow better. All quotes were reasonable (in the same price range). I actually received a business card from Living Art Tree Care on my door several months ago and saved it for a possible future need. I decided to call Living Art and get a quote. As you can see by my rating and how pleased I was with their work, I had to write a review on Angie’s List. The owner (Harry Peterson) promptly showed up early Saturday morning per the scheduled time. They were the last to quote. They were right in the middle of the other two quotes, but after letting them know the price of the other two, he was able to beat the lesser expensive by $30. The other two quotes were from those recommended by neighbors, but they would not be able to do the job until later the following week and it would be at a time while I would be at work. Since I had concerns about the limbs/tree falling onto the deck/coping or in the pool/etc. and possibly doing damage, I wanted to be there while they did it. Living Art said they could come later that Saturday afternoon which worked great for me and the main reason I went with them. Harry said he worked for a tree cutting company for 11 years before going on his own. He had two other helpers with him.
I live on a large lot with very large post oaks and for the most part, most of the trees are very tall with most of the canopy at the very top of the tree. The limbs on two trees were about 20-22 feet from the ground and the trees were about 40+ feet tall. I was very impressed from the beginning. I could see that safety was very important here. Harry harnessed himself in his tree climbing gear and then tied off all the proper knots, clipped all his buckles and latched on his helmet. After throwing his climbing rope over a higher branch, he proceeded to pull himself up the tree by doing some kind of slip knot slide and jerk thing with the rope while he is walking horizontally up the tree. He did not use tree climbing spikes on the trees. I am guessing as not to damage the bark on the outside. The next thing you know he is on top of these two tree limbs adjusting his harnesses to the tree to be safely tied in. Each big branch he cut, he cut it at least two times. Each cut was tied off with rope wrapped over another branch then secured down to a guy on the ground. Once cut, one guy would slowly release the rope and lower the branch to the ground while the other guy on the ground would manage how it was to fall once it got near and touched the ground. I was very impressed with the precision and how they worked together.
The tree to be removed was about 30-35 feet tall with about an 18-24” diameter trunk that had grown outward (leaned) towards and over the pool. Like the limb cutting above, he climbed the tree, harnessed himself securely to the tree and cut the major branches off the top and had them slowly lowered to the ground. Since this tree was to be cut down, he did climb this one with tree spikes. Once down to the main trunk of the tree, he cut the tree in 3-4 foot sections until he could cut the rest from the ground. He finished off by using his grinding machine to grind the stump about 8-10” below the surface of the ground.
And finally, they loaded it all to their trailer and hauled it off. They raked up all the branches and blew the entire area where they worked, sawed, hauled, etc. so the only notice they were there was dirt/wood chips were the trunk was and saw chips where the other limbs were cut. I am very pleased with the whole experience. I would definitely recommend Living Art Tree Care to anyone needing tree trimming/removal; especially if you have a difficult job.
