I woke up sweating on a hot Texas night. My outside unit was buzzing but the fan and compressor were not running. Having experienced this before, I was fairly certain the start capacitor had gone bad. Several phone calls to big name A/C repair companies (ones that advertise 24/7 emergency service) yielded no call backs, and finally I was told by several that the first appointment would be a week away (yikes!) despite my pleas that it would be a simple job. A neighbor recommended James Baker Services based on his past experience. I called James, and he was very friendly and only said that he wished I had called sooner - he had a guy that passed through the area and would've been happy to stop by. Even so, he'd have him come by after his first call, maybe around 10 am (it was already after 8 am).
Based on past experience with contractors I was doubtful I'd be seeing anybody so soon, but sure enough they showed up as promised. A quick check and it was indeed a bad start capacitor. The bad news was he had used his last matching replacement part on a previous job, but not so bad in that he knew how to use what he had to get the job done. The start capacitor is actually two capacitors in a single package, so he adapted two individual capacitors to do the job, wired it up and created a new bracket to hold them in place. All in a matter of minutes, and I had a working A/C again.
The best part? Only $115 all-in. $75 for the call and $40 for the parts...done. I am floored. That is about a third of what I expected to pay, and I didn't have to sweat for a week waiting on those big-name guys. I'm sold; James Baker is my A/C guy from now on.
