Double D Contracting

Basically the way it works is someone from the county comes out and inspects your house to see if you qualify for the rehab program, then they hire contractors to perform the work. They have $20,000 to spend, so once they approve you for the program, they are basically looking for excuses to spend the money. So we had them do a lot of work that might not have been that crucial, since it wasn't costing us anything. In many cases, however, the quality of work was so shoddy that I regret letting them loose on my house. For example, they replaced my old plastic shower with a nice tile one, which is great. However, they never reinstalled the surrounding baseboards, so it looks bad to this day. They replaced all of our windows with new, double-hung energy efficient ones, which is great, but they tore up a lot of the surrounding dry wall doing it, and shattered many of the old windows in the process so that I still have broken grass in my lawn. Basically, they took every improvement I was initially grateful to have done and mucked it up so that I was left wondering whether I was better off before. In addition, they were very difficult to work with when it came to scheduling time to have the work performed. They would take forever to return calls, and seemed to have a habit of showing up unannounced. Often they would show up during the 10 minutes my wife had stepped out to go to the store, and then leave without waiting. Frustrated that she missed them, my wife would stay home the entire day the next few days, afraid of missing them, only to have them not show up. Then, after three or so days of this, she would leave for a few minutes to run an errand, and they would claim that's when they tried to stop by again. It was maddening, and all could have been avoided if only they would answer their phone or return messages. In the end I shouldn't complain because I got a lot of work done at no cost to myself. The electrical, heating and A/C, and plumbing work that was done was flawless, but that's because Double D subcontracted all of that out to other people. Everything Double D was involved in directly was a mess. All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't pay them for anything, and I would never consider them for a job I actually had to pay them for.
