I am nearly certain that Danny Cobb of Bernard's Plumbing was NOT a licensed plumber at the time that he attempted to repair the gas leak in my home. I perceived that Danny Cobb is unethical and dishonest in other ways as well. I am very certain that Danny Cobb of Bernard's Plumbing attempted to significantly overcharge me for what I believed was a licensed and insured repair, but was likely NOT LICENSED at all! I called Danny Cobb from Bernard's Plumbing to repair a natural gas leak on my water heater because he was a local plumber, within my same town. I asked if he was licensed and available. He said he was licensed and that he could be available on Saturday afternoon, April 9, 2016. I described the job accurately. (I knew where the leak was -- at one of the threaded joints -- because the Atmos guy showed me exactly where it was with his leak detector.) While on the phone, I asked Danny what I might expect to pay, roughly. He told me that Saturdays were a little higher so I could expect to pay $136 plus parts. That was fine with me. There probably wouldn't be any parts. I checked and saw that the Bernard's Plumbing Company website clearly states that their plumbers are "licensed and insured for your safety and peace of mind." Danny showed up Saturday, April 9, 2016, as advertised. He called both of my lines a few minutes out, as he said he would. I showed him where Atmos detected the remaining leak, and he went to work. I was in the adjoining family room while Danny was in my laundry room. It sounded like he was banging for some time on the metal pipes that I had just showed him. I presumed it was in an effort to get them loose. It seemed a little rough, but I presumed he knew what he was doing. After about 10-15 minutes, I saw Danny out in his truck. He was writing up the bill. After about 20 minutes total at my house, including the time he was in his truck, he told me what he had just done to fix the problem. He unscrewed the pipe joints, added joint compound, and screwed the pipes back together. He told me that was the entirety of the job, and it was what I expected. So I was fine with this. I asked him if he had a leak detector so that he could show me that the leaks were now gone, but he did not. I thought that was kind of unusual. How does he know he fixed it? But, at that time, I trusted him. I was not unhappy -- until I saw the bill. He charged me $287. I balked at that price. Had he told me it would cost $287 to un-screw and re-screw some pipes together, I would not have hired him. There is no question that he was willing to overcharge me. And when the people I trust and hire are willing to significantly overcharge me, I perceive dishonesty and a general lack of ethics. He explained that the minimum trip charge was $156 on Saturdays. (I am nearly positive he told me to expect $136 the day prior,) He also explained that on top of that $156 trip charge for driving the 5-10 minutes across western Flower Mound, he also charged me $131 for "minor part repair to (illegible) on W/H." Because I balked, he came down to $200. Personally, I still think $200 was an overcharge, but I was willing to call it a day, write an average review and give him a D for pricing. But there was more ... Within a day of Danny's departure, I thought I smelled natural gas again. I called Atmos Energy back out. I now had a leak at the water heater controller, and Atmos shut off my water heater again. I am 100% positive that the controller was not leaking prior to Danny's repair. I was there with the Atmos guy both times while he looked for the leaks. I kept thinking about all that banging Danny was doing on (presumably) those metal pipes. There was definitely loud banging on metal. A lot of it. I am guessing that the banging created the leak at the controller. Now I needed a new controller. I called Danny Cobb back and explained the problem. Given that he way overcharged me, given that he banged and banged on my water heater without concern for the controller, given that he didn't have a leak detector of any sort to verify his work, and given that he left me with a gas leak after attempting to charge me $287 for unscrewing and screwing two pipe joints together, I asked him more forcefully this time, "Danny. Are you even a licensed plumber?" He said, kind of incredulously, "Yes!" He also told me he'd be out that day to look at my unit. He arrived a few hours later with another guy who he introduced as a plumber. He told me he'd find a brand new controller, that he'd probably have to order it, and that he'd let me know right away about when the part was coming in and when he would install it. He did all of that. When the part came in the next day, he told me he'd be out later that same day to replace it. And he was! Once again, I was happy with his communication and responsiveness. But, when he came out to install the new part, he again brought that same guy. The guy he brought did all of the work. When I mentioned to Danny, in front of the real plumber, that I overheard him (Danny) banging on the metal very loudly during the first visit, he balked and said, "No, I wasn't banging. You may have heard me drop a tool." NO. I did NOT hear him drop a tool. He was very clearly banging on metal, and for some time! When the real plumber was done installing the controller, Danny said, "There. Now you basically have a whole new system. Pretty much everything here has been replaced." When I asked him to clarify, "What do you mean everything's been replaced? I have a new controller, right? Did you replace anything else at all?", he responded with, "I'm just saying, you have all new parts now around your entire system." Again, I tried to clarify, "What other parts are new, Danny, besides the controller?", he couldn't answer me. A few other issues like this came up -- Danny saying weird things that just weren't true, either volunteering them outright, or in response to questions or comments that I made. Here's what I strongly suspect: I think Danny was putting on an act for the real, licensed plumber that he brought along to make the second repair. I suspect that Danny may have given that plumber an earful about what I may have done or said, none of it true, so that he could defend his work, justify the new leak as MY fault, and save face with whoever the guy was that he brought along. It was very clear that Danny had some kind of hidden agenda on that second visit. With all of these things in mind -- the overcharge, the banging, the broken controller and second leak, the plumber he brought along the second time who did all of the work, and the weird hidden-agenda comments he kept making, I became suspicious that Danny Cobb did not have a plumbing license after all. And I'm nearly certain I was correct. When they left that day, April 22, 2016, I looked him up by name on the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. I could not find a Danny Tyler Cobb, but I found two Danny Dale Cobb II's -- one was a Journeyman plumber with license number 30450, and the other was a Master Plumber with license number 35932. One shared Danny Cobb's Flower Mound address, and the other had a Fort Worth address. I suspect the two Danny Dale Cobb II's are the same person and that they are a relative of the Dale Tyler Cobb who serviced the gas leak in my home without a license. My suspicions were further solidified by some new information on the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners website effective April 30, 2016. There is now a third Danny Cobb listed there. Danny Tyler Cobb is now listed as a "Plumber's Apprentice." He was listed that way effective April 30, 2016. He was not on the website on April 22 or April 23, 2016. I also noticed that the two Danny Dale Cobb II?s are now both listed with a Flower Mound address. The Fort Worth address is gone. It is my suspicion that Danny Cobb intentionally led his customers to believe that he was a licensed plumber and that he hoped people would mistake him as the licensed Danny Dale Cobb II. These are serious accusations, I know. I gave it quite a bit of thought prior to writing this review. I just thought that other customers should be forewarned.
