Landscaping
Awful. Martin knocked on our door several weeks ago, offering to do our landscaping. He told me he did the landscape for another home in our neighborhood and was trying to keep his guys busy. I told him I'd have to discuss it with my husband. Martin gave me a quote ($300 plus tax for 5 shrubs, 4 boulders, and a cactus including sod and installation). My husband and I agreed to hire him.
Martin came to our home on March 19, 2012 to collect a down payment of $180. At that time, he gave us a receipt detailing the work to be completed. He promised to have the boulders for us by March 21 and said we would visit a local nursery on March 24 to pick out the plants.
On March 21, he showed up and said he didn't have the rocks, but they would be in the next day. He then asked if we wanted a drip line installed, I told him yes but we wanted to wait for that. While I was inside calling my husband, Martin took it upon himself to have some guy install the drip line, while Martin himself trespassed into my backyard. He charged us $55 for the drip line, which I paid against my better judgement.
He never showed up the following day with the boulders. On Friday, March 23, we called him several times, though he never answered his phone. We left messages asking where he was and if we were going to visit the nursery the following day. He called back on March 24, claiming he had personal issues that needed his attention the previous day. When asked about the nursery visit, he told us to visit the nursery and have them set aside the plants we wanted and that he would pick them up on Monday, March 26, 2012 and would complete our landscaping the same day.
He never showed up on Monday, and once again never answered our calls. He called back Tuesday with another excuse. I demanded he either return our money immediately or plant the shrubs by the end of the day Wednesday, March 28. He promised to be at the house to complete the work Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 1:30.
Wednesday morning at 10:30, Martin called me and confirmed our appointment. When we hadn't heard anything by 2:00, both my husband and I called and left him messages. Martin called my husband around 2:40 and promised to call within a half hour, as he was just finishing up a job and then would be heading our way. We never heard anything else from him and he didn't return our calls. That evening my husband sent him a text informing him that we were going to contact the authorities if he didn't return our money.
Martin called back Thursday, March 29, and promised to complete the yard on Monday, April 2 if we wouldn't call the authorities. My husband agreed. Martin never showed up or called us on April 2.
A report has been filed with the El Paso Police Department. Martin called me on Wednesday, April 4 at 2:30 and said he would be at the house with our refund at 4:30. Once again, he never showed up. We learned our lesson and hope to save other homeowners from the horrible experience.
