At this point I just don't know what to answer. Finally, she suggest that I go look for the person who helped me, I make sure the part is discharged from the other Lowe's system and then come back to pay for the part, plus pay for home delivery -I think around $45.00 - (the other Lowe's is in town). If the part is in inventory, it would be delivered between 5-7 days.
From the get-go, I had worked with getting a quote on an entire roof replacement with Alex from Lowe's (Redd Rd.) project department. Alex was great and he provides outstanding customer service! He worked with us more than once on getting the EXACT color shingle we wanted - we were slightly picky on getting an exact color. Alex explained every step thoroughly, introduced me to the contracted company's roofing manager Mike. Alex even helped me with another home project issue I had when he probably didn't need to.
I called around El Paso trying to find reasonable quotes, but to be honest, we just felt more comfortable with an established company replacing our roof. Alex was professional and set a great tone. The price was great, lower than most places around town and Lowe's uses Corning shingles which we decided was also a trusted brand. Also, Alex was very specific about installing some vents which were the most updated in our roofs (our home did not have a single exterior vent upstairs) and galvanized drip flashing that our house also didn't have.
After picking the exact color shingle we wanted, we decided to hire them to replace our roof and I made an appointment to see Alex who updated our quote to reflect a new price (special ordered shingles cost more). What was neat was that we had upgraded to refrigerated air (with another company because Lowe's was too expensive) during the summer and in that process one swamp color was removed. Alex discounted our quote because they no longer needed to remove an extra cooling unit. We appreciated this honesty. I signed the contract, set a date and I was told it would be a week long project. He advised me that the color I wanted had to be special ordered so we had to wait about 2 weeks for it to come in. He tried his best to get it here faster but it showed up in time for the estimated start date.
Here's my first small complaint. Since I was told the project would take about a week (and other companies told me the same) I cancelled my landscaping project.
At 7:30 am on October 22, a Lowe's truck showed up with a forklift and downloaded all of the roofing material onto my drive way for the roofers. Around 8:00 am, Mike showed up, explained that they would scrape off all the old shingles off on day 1 and install on day 2 and 3. I asked if it would take them all week for them to complete the job he said "No, we HAVE to be out by Wednesday." Wow. Um ok great...except I couldn't get my landscaper to come back later in the week.
It was slightly messy during the project. One of my yard lights was pulled out and randomly plugged into the ground and some of my Halloween decorations were pulled out by their power cords and slightly damaged. I do have to say in the end, they picked up EVERYTHING when the job was done. Even the stuff that fell onto my second floor balcony.
During the project while I was away from home, I did have to return home because they tripped my power. No power = no work.
Day 3, they ended up working a little later than they did the first couple days, I think they left between 5 and 5:30. I was home. But when they left, they left. No one came to tell me they were done. Mike didn't explain how the job went and what they did...they just left. I went out to the back yard and noticed they left 2 packs of shingles and half a box of shorter shingles. Because they just took off, I didn't know if they were left over, if they were intentionally for me or if they forgot it!
Lowe's called me a couple days later and I explained to them that I did have a couple questions for the roofer and that they just left, she said she noticed because I hadn't signed a satisfaction sheet. Ok? So she made me an appointment to have my concerns addressed with Mike the following day at my house. He never showed. Couple days later he called my house phone and said he had been trying to reach me...not as much as he made it sound, he only called once that day.
Lowe's called me again to tell me that Mike had been trying to reach me. If he had showed up for the appointment he had and made me wait for, it wouldn't be an issue. He finally showed up that day because he was in the neighborhood and I addressed my concerns about him missing the appointment, the extra shingles (they were extras for me), how they just left, and I expressed a complaint about the tar looking slightly messy on the front of my house. The black tar guy was messier with it than I would've wanted. Not a huge, huge deal, it's just slightly splattered on my walls in some spots. It's also thick where the wall meets the roof out front. Mike explained they do it that way to ensure I never have a leak. I also inquired about some shingles that looked raised and he explained that those were the upgraded ceiling vents. Oh...would've been better had it been explained the day the job was done instead of a week or so later!
Anyhow, all in all I was satisfied. The overall color of the shingles was a little darker than the samples they have but it still looks better than the old ones. The price was great for getting my entire roof replaced. They were always on time and literally worked all day to get the job done. They did an excellent job not leaving debris around. I just wish that Mike and the roofing crew were as courteous as Alex from Lowe's. If they wouldn't have just left on the last day, showed up to the appointment I set for my concerns...I would have given them an A.
It hasn't rained in El Paso yet, so until it rains, I won't have a clue on the quality of the roofing and sealing. I'm sure it won't be a problem. If it is, I'll be back to update this review.
I went looking for a matching light (already had one up on the front of the house). There was no matching light. I asked at customer service when they would re-order the lights. I offered to pay for the light in advance. "George" whose nametag said he was the head cashier, said they had 2 on order, but didn't know when they would be in. I asked if another store in town had any. He told me that the Northeast (30 min drive one way) and Eastside (1hr drive one way) stores had them. I asked for one to be sent from another store. "Well, you see, we're in inventory and I'll have to ask the manager's permission to ICB one. If I can get permission, it will take a week, is that OK?" I said I supposed it would have to be.
I had now been waiting about 10 minutes. After an additional 5 minutes of waiting for permission from the manager, George came back out of the Manager's office and started making phone calls. Five minutes later, he was still trying to get someone at another store to talk to him. He then told me that the other store would also have to agree to ICB (whatever that is) the light.
I said, "So, I can drive to another store, buy the light and walk out with it?"
"Yes."
"But you don't even know if you can get another store to agree to send you the light, and even if they do, you won't have it for a week?"
"Yes."
"This doesn't strike me as stellar customer service."
Blank stare.
"I'll just drive to another store. This is rediculous."
"But I'm already on the phone!"
I understand inventory time. But it strikes me that if this store continues handling customer requests to replace merchandise that was damaged before purchase this poorly, they won't need to worry about inventory, because they won't have customers.
Another example of Positively Underachieving Service (PUS)
(Note :I will use the store to replace matching outdoor lights for the rest of the yard, but then I will seriously consider using Home Depot instead. A shame, since we are beginning a complete remodel of our house and will spend approximately $100K doing so.)
