"My customer had his personal mechanic remove the THM350 automatic 4X4 transmission from his 1978 Chevy pick up and had him bring it to me for a "Bench" rebuild. A "Bench" rebuild is when the customer saves some labor money by removing and reinstalling the transmission himself. In doing this the customer is responsible to remove and replace the transmission if warranty work requires it so. The customer called when the rebuilt transmission was installed by his mechanic, informing me that the transmission had no reverse at all. I asked him to re-check the fluid level to mack sure it was full. So as not to cause a possible unnecessary removal of the transmision I asked him to bring me the vehicle to me so I could check it out. He dropped off the vehicle for my inspection. I put the transmission into reverse and it did have reverse, but, when I backed up a couple of yards it went into neutral. I found that the transmission was a little more than 2 quarts low on transmission fluid. I added 2 quarts of fluid and 1 pint of BG brand automatic transmission additive. The transmission then worked perfectly, all gears forward and reverse I continued my inspection of the installation done. I found that both of the driveshafts installed by the customer,s mechanic were worn out, and there was a gas tank leak. There were no leaks on the transmission. I informed the customer of this. The customer and his mechanic test drove the vehicle both were satisgied it was working correctly and they left. Later that same day the customer called to inform me that there was no reverse again. At this time not knowing what damage the customer did by driving the vehicle low on fluid I offered to go back through the transmission at no cost to him. This was the last contact I had with the customer. I hold my good reputation close, and do everything I can to protect it. I don't know what I could of done differently."
