The Allsafe technician arrived at the house and left, before I could make it home to meet with him. My wife had been at the home, at the time and said he wasn't there long. He left me an invoice w/ no charge, stating, "Looked thru panel, tighened all lugs and took voltage readings. Everything checked out to be OK." House-Pro returned to service A/C unit, unit failed again, soon after House-Pro finished 3rd or 4th call. I brought in Universal Wiring (UW) 24 days later, a reputable company from Angie's List, to perform their "Big Deal" electrical inspection of my home for $74, which included an assessment of my breaker box. They were very professional and patiently spent much time w/ me, inspite of my inability to provide them the comfort of an air-conditioned home at which to meet w/ me. Their inspection read, "Panel is burning up and needs to be changed before becoming very dangerous. A/C is not a 2-pole and is hooked to burning buss bar,...main electrical service has multiple issues with installation and should be replaced and repaired. Most of home is un-grounded...." The (UW) field supervisor showed me the charred buss bar at the breaker contact and said the 40-amp circuit at the buss bar was arching, thereby continuing to burn the bar and tripping out my A/C unit. He concluded the A/C needed a 50-amp beaker to run w/o event. Allsafe was apparently not that safe at all! Unable to afford Universal Wiring's repair prices and determined to reap a benefit from a home warranty I spent nearly $5,000 on, over the course of 10 years, I called Allsafe to return and do a "real" check on the unit. The tech returned 4 days later, free of charge. We looked at the box together, and I had him pull back the 40-amp breaker to see the charring of the buss bar. He argued that the bar wasn't burned, just discolored, though I could clearly see about 1/4 of the bar notched out of each edge of it. Allsafe's tech continued, saying the breaker box was old and he would recommend a replacement to the home warranty, but stressed that they were not likely to approve, because the box is still working. I thought to myself, at what point does it stop "working?" When it catches fire? The box is outside my 9-yr old son's bedroom window. Does it catch his room on fire with it? I asked the tech to call the home warranty and make the replacement recommendation in my presence, as did House-Pro, but he refused. He said he had to get to another call and didn't even stick around to address the issue of repairing the recepticles in my home, though I clearly saw it printed on his work order. He had only spent about 15 min. with me. He then gave me a blank invoice. His only concern, my signature, was I satisfied w/ his appearance and his performance. I cited N/A on the performance, because no work had been done, and I wanted the replacement of my box covered. I said I was satisfied w/ his appearance, though in my mind, his assistant looked like a gang member, somewhere between 18 and 22 years old. Again, I didn't want to appear prejudice and not get my box covered. My warranty called me hours later to tell me my box wouldn't be covered, because I had the wrong size breaker and it was improperly installed. They denied any recomendation by Allsafe to replace the breaker box. I had a 40-amp breaker. The manufacturer specs on the back panel of the A/C r equire a breaker with a min. of 37.5 amps and max. of 50-amps. You do the math!
