He and his brother arrived promptly and installed the tub and tile surround with faucets, they worked late and appeared to be working efficiently.
Upon completion of the work, we found that there was a lot of uneven edges on the tile surround due to the tile shape and he left it jagged, unfinished and un-grouted/un-caulked. During the discussion regarding the tile install and finish, we explained the intended look and showed a photo. As the professional tile installer, he did not explain that the finish would be different based on our tile shape, or encourage us to have another type of edge/lip/molding.
We then found that the floor tiles were not laid flat and had sharp edges poking up in the walkway. Additionally, there were several tiles that were laid with too small or too large of a grout line ? and were laid out of alignment with the other tiles.
We immediately called Manuel to explain that we were unsatisfied with the work and wanted to see what could be done to fix it. He told us he was going on vacation for a week and would send his brother to see us the next day. When 2 days had passed and his brother did not show up, we texted him again. He apologized and said he?d come out and see it when he returned from vacation. (He never provided a return date, and we foolishly did not ask ? we assumed it would still be 1 week.)
During this time, we could not put the bathroom back together or use the shower because the floor tiles had to be removed and
reinstalled, and the shower could not be sealed because we needed to resolve the issue with the surround edge. After weeks of texting, Manuel finally said he could come to our house 8a-9a on Saturday, 7/31. At 9:51a he texted to say he was on his way. He arrived at about 10:40a. Upon his arrival, he told us that the tile we purchased was not ?rectified? and it was our fault for buying low quality materials for the floor. (We have no idea what this type of tile is and why he did not explain this concern when we hired him) He then told us that he did not know we wanted a clean edge on the tub surround tile and that we could just put some plastic molding around it. We did not discuss plastic molding, so why would he assume that we were going to do that? Why not ask? He said he could correct some of the floor tiles by chipping them out and resetting them. He refused to understand and accept that the tiles were not level due to his installation process.
During the install/replacement of the drywall and backer board, they cut through the wall and into the drywall of the guest room which backs up to the bathroom wall.
He explained that there was not a fix for the rough/uneven edged tub surround tile, so we had to install a plastic impregnated wood shoe mold around the tile. This looks ?ok?, but is not at all nice and clean as the look we had intended.
He chipped out the floor tiles and replaced them, they are a bit more level, but the grout colors do not match up and he chipped the edge of several tiles during the process without repair or apology. We pointed them out and he declined to repair them again.
Once the caulk and grout had cured and we sealed the tile, 8/10, we attempted to use the tub and shower for the first time. The diverter from the brand new Moen faucet was allowing water to come out of the shower head, even when the tub should be
on independently. Additionally, the water would not run cold. While testing this, we also found that the drain was not flush in the bottom of the tub and the water was not draining out. We reached out to Manuel again who said he could ?fix? it but did explain what he thought the problem was. He also told us he could only come during the work week day and was unwilling to come on a Saturday, Sunday or after hours. We had already had to make so many arrangements for our child, dog, and work, we wanted to be able to discuss the issues with him and explained that we needed to be able to be at the house at the same time and not allow him access while we were at work. We expressed our frustration and that we wanted a refund for the faucet installation service because the items he installed and fixed were not functioning properly and he refused. We then said we would file a complaint against his business with the Attorney General and he flippantly told us to go ahead.
We hired a plumber to come out and look at the tub/shower/drain. They advised that they could see that the tub drain was installed incorrectly and would be able to be removed and reinstalled. The plumber said that the water issue between the tub and shower might be the diverter valve, but was possibly something wrong with the pipe/tube between the spout and the shower. The only way to really access that would be to remove the newly installed tile or to finish cutting into the wall that the contractor had already damaged. We offered to cut into the guest room wall, since we already had to replace the drywall to fix the damage from the cut.
The plumber was able to determine that Manuel used PEX tubing to run form the tub spout to the shower and it had a kink in it, which needed to be replaced. He was able to remove the drain to determine that it was originally not screwed in all the way, the gasket was installed upside down and it was off center (resulting in water not going down the drain, but rather just onto the cement slab). He replaced the Moen tub spout just in case the diverter was bad. This was an additional 2 hours of labor on top of what we had already paid Acaz to do + we now have a large hole in our guest room wall to repair.
All in all, I know he can do good work ? I?ve seen it at my friend?s house. But, I think he rushed our job to get to vacation and then felt like the work was too little or the job too low paying to be worth proper follow up. 2k might not be much to him, but it was to us ? knowing we could have done the work, but were sold on spending the money for the 2 day lead time- and that 2 days ended up being 51 days.
Wood floors went well, they took away old carpet and padding and finished the job in one day as promised. Accidentally cracked a tile by the fireplace while pulling up carpet but they replaced it with another one the same day as well as fixing another chipped tile in kitchen that was broken by us a few months ago.
We would recommend this company for price and work and would use them again.
