Now here is the problem. They charged $219 for a part you can purchase for $40 to $50 online and at Home Depot etc. The exact same part, brand and all.
I called to try and figure out why such a huge difference in price. They took my phone number and a little while latter, Lance, who stated he was the owner called me back. He explained to me that the $219 included the part mark-up, trouble shooting and installation. I then asked what the service call fee was for, and he explained that was just the trip charge and did not include any time spent troubleshooting or working. He also claimed all this was the standard for the industry.
So, I'm left with $120 to $170 for less than 30 minutes of work, depending on the mark up of the part. Don't forget to add in the $40 trip charge and the mysterious T.F.S. fee of $12.
I told the owner, he could either comeback out and remove the part he just installed and give me my check back or I would just stop payment on the check. His choice. He agreed to return the check and remove the part.
To sum up:
- I find the trip charge of $40 to be excessive considering it does not include any work of any kind.
- Their labor rate is severely overpriced, somewhere around $240 to $340 per hour, in this case.
Lastly, I called another electric company and got a quote for replacing the arc fault circuit breaker...$145 all inclusive. I guess it's not really the industry standard after all.
"."
I could have used someone local but because they supposedly GUARANTEED their work I used them when it would have been cheaper to use someone else. The diagnosgtic charges are a killer. The first diagnostic charge I had as I am looking at my receipt was$609.00 and the second was $429.00 with partial repair. This is where I made my first mistake at hiring this company.
I have other work to be done but guess I will go local.
"I’m very sorry to read about your experience. However I would like to take time and clear up some miss information. You have called us out on 5 occasions since May. On 4 of those occasions you suggested that the work was a Warranty. On all 4 occasions the problems were either with electrical items that we had never worked on, or with lighting that you have provided and asked us to install. We have cautioned you each time on buying lighting from the local Box Store, but you have insisted. You have been informed each time that we do not warranty parts that we do not provide, and you have agreed and understood. When you called on the 4th you said the problem was a warranty, and involved a light that had been installed on the barn that would turn off when a door was shut. In the interest of making sure any potential warranty is handled, we scheduled the call as a warranty and sent an electrician. When he got there, we learned that you had already purchased a new light fixture, which we thought unusual considering you called the problem in as a warranty. The electrician was able to quickly determine the problem was the ballast in the fixture, you provided, already going out (What we had warned about). You then decided that you wanted the new light put on a 20 ft pole in your driveway instead of the barn. I’m sorry ma’am; we came prepared to warranty our install of a light on the side of a barn. That is easily a one man job. However, installing a light on a 20 ft pole without a lift is actually too dangerous for one person to do, but we did it anyway, hence, you having to hold the ladder. Had you informed us that the work was really going to be on the pole we could have been prepared for that. I can assure you, no electrical service company comes prepared with gear required for a 20 ft pole light unless they were told that in advance. You have been a customer of ours for a couple of years now, and we appreciate you trusting us enough to keep calling us back. After 16 years of business we had to make a difficult decision and cut our service area back. The electrical service industry is experiencing a lack of qualified electricians that we have not seen before, and unfortunately because of the massive size of the DFW metroplex we had to stop servicing our most western and Southwestern areas. Unfortunately you are 25 miles further west than our new service area. With that being said, we still are willing to warranty any work that we have done for you prior to informing you of our service area change. I believe that is as fair as I can possibly be. We have apologized several times over the changes and given ample notice of not warranting any additional work, but you chose to go ahead and have it done anyway. Lance Caddell President"
The work was performed professionally and efficiently. Michael did a great job explaining what he'd observed in the attic and what could be done to correct the issues.
I felt the price was fair and that his objective was to perform the work correctly and efficiently without running up the bill. The components of the bill (prices for different repairs and other administrative fees) were clearly communicated.
In my opinion, all of these things are very positive and speak well of the way Caddell Electric does business.
In summary, A+ experience.
It was nice to have an electrician come out to the home and poke around at some things and he definitely alerted me to a few items that I intend on replacing / fixing during the year, so I'll be using Caddel Electric again. The electrician (Michael) was very courteous and knowledgeable and was pretty honest about everything he saw.
I can tell Caddell is pretty pricey when it comes to certain items (e.g., full scale inspections of a home's electrical system, installation of exhaust fans, dropping new lines, etc.) but pretty reasonable for others (e.g., replacement of a ground rod, whole-home surge protection).
mike showed up on time (actually a few minutes early), showed some ID and even offered to put on boot covers if he needed to come inside. All the work was done in the garage, so this was not needed, but appreciated. Nice guy and always curteous. We talked about several options for installing the outlets and he layed out several which differed in cost/time/difficulty. The low cost solution would have been to mount the outlets over the sheet-rock and not flush mount them, but I chose to flush mount them to match the rest of the house. we discussed any challenges that might arrise during the installation like fire blocks, gas lines, etc. and the load/specs (GFCI) on the outlets. I mentioned I would be running some shop equipment so he suggested adding breakers to the panel, which I had already been expecting to do. This company gives flat rate "per job" estimates, not a "per hour" estimate. What you see is what you pay. Not a bad way of doing business.
He estimated it to be a 2-3 hour job and he was right on the money. I let him do his install and when he was complete, he took me through everything he did. He showed me the new breakers, the labels, the outlets, and how to reset them if needed. Great service, no issues and would definitly do business with them again.
The price quoted was the priced paid. The serviceman called asking if he could come early and arrived promptly.
All options were discussed thoroughly with prices before any work was performed and explanations provided as the work progressed.
Overall, this is a reputable company and I'd use them for future services.
P.S.
A+ in my book.
Thanks
Michael was very friendly and said if we should call for any of the other discussed work, he'd be the one to show up.
