Replaced doorknob and lock on 1 exterior door. Bottom line: they damaged a door that will cost as much as $3000 to replace because they couldn't drill the holes properly to replace the doorknob. Original deal was to do this on 3 exterior doors, but after they messed up the first one I wouldn't let them do the others. Becasue the new doorknobs they brought required a larger hole then the old doorknobs they drilled a hole for the new doorknob. Actually they drilled 4 or 5 holes before they got one in the correct location. You could see daylight through the door because of all the wood they removed drilling all these holes. The base of the doorknob was not supported over half its circumference because the wood was now missing. The outside of the door had 1/8" thick anodized aluminum sheathing, they drilled multiple holes through that too. They came back a few days later and installed an 1/32" anodized aluminum plate over the area to cover up the holes and support the base of the doorknob. Much less thick than the original sheathing and different color because the original was weathered. Also exposed aluminum at the edges of the new plate. I asked how much to replace the door and they said maybe $2800, if you can find a door of that quality these days. The old door is now compromised by so much wood being removed and the thinner base plate vs. the old sheathing. Much of the door is glassed with only 5"-6" of wood around the glass, so the missing wood around the lock reduces the strength of the door. I have had several break in attempts which were defeated by the strength of the original door and the sheathing. I don't know if the weakened door would hold. I was leaving on an international trip and I needed the door locks to be functional before I left. I didn't have time to fool around with them to try to get it right, so I accepted a compromise. It doesn't look real bad with the plate covering the holes but would look better without the plate, and I have serious concerns about the structural integrity of the door. It still bugs me every time I go through the door. They apologized and their excuse was that they didn't have the correct tool with them to drill the hole so they used an inferior tool. They should have either gone back for the correct tool, or better, go back and get doorknobs to fit the existing hole without drilling. All just due to lack of interest in doing the job correctly. I thought I was hiring people experienced and expert in door installation, but I would have been better off with any locksmith in town.
