On the morning of the appointment, O'Brien called and said that the technician had been dispatched and was on the way. He arrived within 20 minutes. The technician, Jim Donohue, did an assessment of my garage door system and gave me his opinion on what he thought I needed. I never felt any pressure or detected any tactic that he was trying to sell me something. I originally just wanted a garage door tuneup, but learned that my springs were at the end of their life (about 20 years old) and badly rusted, and also that the current rollers were made of metal and the bearings were worn out. Jim recommended nylon rollers which are quieter if I wanted to get them replaced. Since I had the funds available, I decided it was time to go ahead with the major overhaul rather than taking a chance trying to squeeze a few more months of life out of the old parts and then having to handle everything on an emergency basis. I told Jim to go ahead and replace the springs and rollers.
I also asked Jim his opinion about my garage door opener. He said as long as it's working there's really no need to replace it, but he gave me prices for a replacement model, either chain-driven or belt-driven (about $100 higher). My current door opener is a screw-type, which his company does not install. I decided to keep my current opener until it dies since it's still doing its job.
Two hours later, Jim drives away and my garage door is much quieter. I am happy with the work and I feel much better having done it. I thought the price was fair for the work performed. Since I'm a retired person, all these new parts will likely outlast me. I am pleased with the overall experience and I recommend O'Brien Garage Doors to others.
