Concrete Driveway Service, Concrete Repair
$3,600
I bought the house with a flat, dirt 'third driveway' next to my existing driveway, and wanted to have concrete put in.  San Angelo is experiencing a construction boom recently, and I'd been having trouble finding someone with a good track record who was willing to do what is, in comparison, a smallish job.  Liberty was a little pricier than most (I had half-a-dozen estimates), but is established and didn't demand any money up front.  They also advertise a 10% discount for veterans.  The job was to scrape out the dirt area to about 4 inches and pour a driveway, with a level footer on the side (where I was going to build a retaining wall).  Off-the-cuff estimate while standing in the driveway:  $3500.  Actual price given over the phone that evening:  $3800.  Fair enough.  I gave the go-ahead, then mentioned that I'm a veteran and was happy to take advantage of their generous discount offer.
They couldn't work me in right away, but a week or two later called on a Tuesday to say they could start that Wednesday.  I confirmed at that time about the level footer for the wall (I was about to buy the stones for the wall and wanted to make sure they fit) and he assured me it would be done.
They did get done in one day, and it was a lot of work.  It turned out that there was more digging and more dirt than they anticipated, and quite a lot to haul away.  The driveway itself looked fine... but there was no footer for the wall as we agreed.  When I asked about it, I got a somewhat hesitant suggestion that I could trim the wall bricks so that they set level on the slope of the driveway.  In other words, they completely forgot about the footer, even after I specifically mentioned it - again - the day before.
As for the price, when we settled up and I mentioned - again - about the veterans discount, the reply was that the $3800 was discounted... from $4100!  I explained that wasn't possible, as I never mentioned being a veteran until AFTER he gave me the final quote of $3800. He then reluctantly threw out a figure of $3600.
One of the reasons I chose Liberty was because I did not want to have to play this game.  Unfortunately, the job was not completed - no footer - and the price was an unpleasant surprise.  Partly my fault, I suppose, as all I had was a phone message and not a quote on paper.  Still, that's why you want to hire a reputable company, right?  I was willing to pay a little more because I wanted the job done right, without a hassle over the price.
I think Liberty knows concrete, and the guys they had there looked to be hard workers, but my impression is that management is too busy juggling construction jobs during the boom to pay much attention to job details on smaller projects.  As for the price, it was a bit like buying a car:  the final price is always higher than you thought it would be.  It shouldn't have been that way.
Bottom line:  they did a good job with the driveway, but unless you have the time to check up during the job on any details, they may not get done.  And get everything in writing first.

Jan 2015 update:  the concrete is cracking.  Lowering quality from C to F.
