I then had him give me a bid on replacing the roof. He gave a bid for a shingle, and metal roof.
I also talked with him about the problem I was having with the back patio and how it needed the overhang extended.
He said it was a good time to do this, while doing the roof.
Bob came back with quotes on the shingle and metal. The metal was not that much more, so I went with the metal.
Bob and his nephew did the installation of the roof, and the overhang on the patio. They were there (IN the HEAT of SUMMER), and completed it within a week. They cleaned up the mess.
Bob was able to work with me to get the quote and finished order for the insurance company to help pay for the roof.
I would highly recommend Bob. He is honest, and will do a great job. If there is a problem he will not cover it up, but fix it.
He measured and ordered the windows ahead of time, and went with me to order the sliders. I paid for all windows and doors myself. When they were ready, he started work. He broke one window installing it, but paid for it himself. He did not get rid of the old windows as I was giving them to someone else.
I was not home during the work, but I have no problem leaving my house and dogs with Bob. He also came back to adjust one of the screen doors that came off its track. I'm ready to use his assistance and expertise again for my next project.
In the main bathroom, we knocked out a wall dividing the bathroom in 2. Bob removed the tub and repaired a wall in the shower area (I replaced a tub with a walk-in shower), and insulated the walls as needed. He also knocked out a closet and installed a doorway into the hall, He framed in another door in the bath that got a larger door. He installed both doors and a bath fan that vented to the outside.
He also framed in and sheetrocked a small pantry next to the bathroom and stalled a door in that.
In the 2nd bathroom Bob repaired the area where I had ripped out the dividing wall and sheetrocked it. He also repaired the wall in the tub that had been ripped out to repair a leak. He installed a bath fan that vented to the outside.
This work occurred over about 8 weeks, with a few days off here and there. Bob told me up front what things he preferred someone else to do, like electric, plumbing and tiling. He helped me find a guy to do the tiling, and helped me buy supplies that were needed, like doors. I enjoy working with Bob and have no problems giving him the key to my house. He even puts up with my dogs. As I've said before, he is also my neighbor and I continue to use his services as I fix up this house.
We were looking to replace the asphalt roof which was 35 years old. We wanted a standing seam metal roof and Bob gave us an estimate for both standing and non-standing seam metal roofs. Bob says he started out in roofing so he could do the work. We liked his price so we hired him. We also asked if he could find someone to scrape the popcorn ceilings in the entire house, and replace the paneling in the living room and dining room, and paint both rooms. The house is single story, but the living room rises to 2nd story height, so it wasn't something we thought we could do ourselves.
Over the course of 3 months, all the work was done. There was no rush on anyone's part, so we can't really comment on how quickly it all happened. We got written estimates, paid half up front for the roof and the paint and went from there. While the living room was torn apart we asked for 4 sconce boxes, a ceiling fan box, and some outlets and switches to be added, Bob called in Greg Duncan, Duncan Electric company, to do the work. We have Greg lined up to do some more things around the house a little later.
Bob lined up the painter, Tony Licciardello, who did a wonderful job of removing the popcorn, texturing with orange peel, and priming. We picked out a color scheme long distance for the living room using Sherwin Williams colors and he painted it. Removing popcorn is a very messy job and we are still finding bits but he did a pretty good job of cleaning up. He also removed a 70's intercom system and repaired the holes. He did such a good job, I forgot they were ever there when I was painting the bedrooms.
Bob and his grandson, Issac, did a great job on the roof. It looks really nice and we're looking forward to the first rain, if it ever rains again. He cleaned up the area well afterward. He designed a fix to some decorative poles holding up some overhangs by rearranging the angle, and replacing the flimsy wrought iron with wood 4x4s wrapped in galvanized metal. It looks so much better. He also made a new top for the dryer vent.
We plan to use Bob again when we're ready for the next project. He also has great contacts for work he doesn't do himself. And his wife Susan makes great blonde brownies.
