The 5 man crew seemed fine. I now know that the crew member who loads and packs the van has the greatest responsibility for the quality of care. Our goods were carelessly loaded and many pieces arrived scratched, scraped, dented, cracked, bent and broken. The cost to repair and replace the damaged items was almost the same as the moving fee. Everything we packed ourselves arrived in good condition. Many furniture pieces were not wrapped carefully enough or were dropped, which caused damage. We had to endure a lengthy claim process for the damages and wait several months for payment. Now, we must begin the arduous process of arranging repairs. This is a major headache.
The unloading crew was assembled the morning of arrival at destination. They were careless and sloppy, and did not take sufficient care, for example, they gouged the wood floor and scraped the doorway when moving in the washer/dryer. However, because the driver did not fill out a destination damage form, the corporate manager would not take responsibility. They would not require the contract driver to complete the damage report, and as a result we are "stuck" with the cost of these repairs ourselves. We got a run-around instead of the company insisting on the driver submitting complete paperwork which would facilitate insurance coverage for this damage.
We have made two previous international corporate moves and one previous domestic long-haul move with less damage. This short intrastate move was the worst! I am frustrated and very disappointed with the service provided by this company. I would never rehire nor recommend them.
There was a box of hardware items missing. We never even saw a hardware box until 2-3 weeks after we started unpacking. There was a large armoir that we were going to donate. It is a good thing that I looked in there because they had put the arms to an antique dresser in there and tied them up. Had I never looked in there, I would not have been able to assemble to dresser.
Nobody followed up on any of this stuff either.
There was a bookcase I wanted to set up in my husband's office. We did not find the pieces for the shelves until a month after we moved in. The things that we did pack, I have never seen more paper in my life. I had a huge box that had lampshades in it. They were all broken. My grandmothers antique piece of furniture was gauged up, scraped up, the leg was completely broken off. They did not end up paying me for any of these damages.
I have for some reason my mother's bowling ball and bowling shoes. One of the packers put this in a box with two antique hat boxes. It ruined them.
I have a basket full of broken furniture pieces. The desk was broken and I had marked that as a high-value item. According to the movers, they had found it that way at the warehouse.
I had another antique corner shelf that was inherited from my mom. It was broken. I ended up gluing it back together myself.
Through all this, I called the sales representative as these things were discovered, and she said I am sorry, I know you are upset. I wrote this letter because after all of this I got a bill from them saying I still owed them.
"When household goods are transported, there are times when damage occurs even when the utmost of care is exhibited. Regrettably, [member name removed]' did have damage to some of her items. Both parties adhered to the proper procedures for claim(s) adjudication. [member name removed]'s claim settlement amount did not meet or exceed the deductible level ($1,000) of valuation she elected for her move. Therefore we are prohibited by Federal regulations to compensate for the damages."
