If you're looking for an honest, conscientious, hard working plumber then Joe Caldwell is your guy. I originally found out about Joe via his uncle Rick who runs Austin's Best Plumbing (also a terrific plumber). Rick brought Joe in to consult about relocating a flue pipe from my old water heaters that I wanted to bring up to code and when we started doing the math it made more sense (with the rebates and federal tax credit) to install a new tankless system. I also discovered while I was contemplating the new system that my yard line was leaking under the house. Joe replaced the old galvanized pipe and fixed the leak. Both projects were labor intensive and Joe even waited for the city inspector on my behalf when I could not be home to meet with them for the inspection. He really went above and beyond on this job and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a good, honest plumber. I wouldn't hesitate to call Joe again for any plumbing job, large or small.

Mr Caldwell came recommended.

We had purchased the valves ourselves. Thus Mr. Caldwell's services were nearly all labor.

After replacing one shower/tub valve, Mr Caldwell suggested that we attempt to find a replacement part for the second valve as opposed to replacing the fixture. When he billed us on the day of service, he indicated that the charge included his returning to fix the second valve. Normally, advanced payment would not be acceptable, but since he came recommended, we trusted him.

Mr Caldwell has since indicated that the charge did not include replacing the second shower valve and that the $285 invoice covered just one valve.  A second shower valve replacement would cost the an additional $285 (all labor).

When pressed, Mr. Caldwell indicated that "I flat rate my prices its always the same. It doesn't matter if its 10 minutes or 10 hours it will cost the customer the same."  Not only does this not make sense, but it was not what we were told when scoping the work or when invoiced.

When pressed further, Mr Caldwell become beyond unprofessional, responding to email with only the word "null."

Beyond that, Mr Caldwell did not do any clean up. He did not have any caulking with him, suggesting that we caulk it ourselves. We gave Mr. Caldwell some of our silicon caulk so he could finish the job. I have since had to re-caulk his work. He left clearly visible gaps between the fixture and the tile.
Response from Caldwell Plumbing
"First let me state that the price was for one shower valve which the receipt was clearly marked for and I do have a copy of the receipt for reference. Secondly you were charged $285.00 for 3 hours of labor which also included all copper and solder. I highly encourage you to check with other local plumbing companies in the area to see what their hourly rate is, I have and average going rate is about $125.00 to $150.00 an hour not including a service call fee of anywhere between $50.00 to $80.00. So typically for the work that was done you would have paid about $425.00 not counting the copper or solder. As for the chalking, you stated yourself that you were to supply all parts so the chalk was your responsibility to get. Also you stated that you did the chalking yourself so if you had to do any repairs on it than your initial chalking job was not done very well. I am sorry you are unhappy and not satisfied but as you can see I have been plumbing for about 20 years and you are the first negative post so I must be doing something right. I wish you the best and hope you find a licensed master plumber who well come do future work for you at extremely cheap rate that you seem to want to pay but remember you get what you pay for."
